Navigating the World of Homeschooling and Roadschooling
Gypsies At Heart

Homeschool, Roadschool, Worldschool, Oh My! A few weeks ago, I was invited by my dear friend, Ashley Logsdon, to chat about what our roadschool days look like on her podcast, Mama Says Namaste. As we drank our coffee and chatted about roadschooling, I realized how much I had learned over the past two years.  Our family distinguishes roadschooling from homeschooling in that we do it while traveling full-time on the road and leverage the resources found during our travels to enhance our education. What I mean by this is if we are in a national park, this is a great opportunity to practice r ..read more

Surviving your first RV rally
Gypsies At Heart
by Sarrah

So, you signed up to attend an event? Now what?  Let me start out by stating that we are not “rally experts.” Technically we have only attended one FTF RV Rally with the SW 2020 Family Reunion being our second; however we have attended a handful of other events: Escapades with Escapees, Xscapers Annual Bash, and quite a few other Xscapers Convergences and FTF Meetups. With each new get together, we learn new tricks to make our life a bit easier during an event. No matter if it’s a full week of socializing, potlucks, and activities or just a laid back-hang out for a few days ..read more

RV Air Conditioning on a Small Generator
Gypsies At Heart

We all know how miserable it can be during the summer if you are boondocking or dry-camping somewhere and are not able to run the A/C. Or, how about you have a 50amp camper with two air conditioners but are on a 30amp pole and can only run one at a time without tripping the breaker? Well, you can make it happen! Our 5th wheel has a 13,500btu Dometic A/C on the front and 15,000btu Dometic A/C on the rear and we run both on a single 3,500 watt generator. How you ask? Micro-Air East Start’s of course! These are installed inside your A/C units and reduce the power surge when the compressor kick ..read more

Happy Nomadiversary!

July 10th marks one year since we moved into our camper to travel the country. It’s amazing to think how quickly this year has gone by, how much we have seen, and all the memories that we have made. Although at the moment we are parked in our driveway awaiting next Tuesday when we officially close on the house and we become “houseless!”, our plan afterwards is to moochdock on some family land and hit the road on Sunday, July 21st.  July 21st is an important day. Our rig, Willie, is named after my Gramma, which the 21st just happens to be her birthday. She passed away in February of this ye ..read more

Grand Canyon: So much more than a giant hole in the ground.
Gypsies At Heart

March 25-27, 2019 I was very hesitant about visiting the Grand Canyon. Why? For a few reasons. For starters, it’s one of the top ten busiest national park and has over 6 millions visitors every year. The mere thought of having to fight our way through a crowd to stand in line to get a picture of the canyon was not something that sounded fun to me. Secondly, I imagined the Grand Canyon was a grand hole in the ground. I mean, I figured the park was probably more than that, but for some reason I couldn’t shake this image from my mind. I’ve seen other people’s pictures, a nice family smiling in ..read more

Getting Cozy with Cacti
Gypsies At Heart

March 22-23, 2019 It’s been an item on my bucket list for as long as I can remember… to see a large cactus, otherwise known as the Saguaro Cactus. As we pulled into Tucson, we saw a few here and there, but it wasn’t until we were driving up the mountain side to the NP West, that we could see the forest of cacti. Best birthday ever! Our lives have obviously changed a lot since we set out. We have tried to do away with traditional “gifts” for holidays and instead focus more on experiences. It makes total sense when living in a 40ft rig with no extra storage for unnecessary crap. So thi ..read more

RV Travel And Crazy Weather
Gypsies At Heart
by Sarrah

One aspect of this gypsy life that we didn’t consider until it snuck up and bit us, was how crazy the weather can be. We have had bad weather living in North Carolina, but nothing like we have experienced while being on the road, especially in a camper. Toronto – Our First Wind Storm While we were up in Toronto, we experienced 60 mph winds that took down trees and power lines. After the girls started getting upset, we pulled in the slides and left. Where you ask? Thankfully there was an outlet mall not far, not a good outlet mall by any means, but at least we were safe from the winds a ..read more

Happy 2019!
Gypsies At Heart

The last part of 2018 flew by but rewarded us with memories that will last a lifetime. It was in April of 2018 that we decided to at least try for full time living and traveling. We weren’t sure if it was even a possibility between work, our home, and school. If we failed, then at least we tried. And look at us now! We have learned a lot about ourselves and have grown closer as a family, not only because of proximate living quarters, as we wandered the country. Some fun stats of our adventure from July- December Counties: 2 USA & Canada States: North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylva ..read more

Layover in Kingfield
Gypsies At Heart
by Sarrah

Because Bar Harbor to Montreal was more than a six hour drive, we planned a layover in Kingfield, Maine. As we drove through town and up a horrible road to the campground, we were both intrigued by this place and a little sketched out. Our campground was nestled in the Sugarloaf Mountain area, complete with water front activities and a playground that the girls were crazy about. After unhooking and setting up, we decided it was adventure time! Because the Appalachian Trail runs through this area, Joseph wanted to hike a portion of it. Well, we never found the trail head, but what we found ..read more
