99% of manuscripts submitted to publishers in the United States are rejected. 99%. Imagine that. For every 100 manuscripts written, 99 are rejected and unpublished. That sounds like a pretty daunting landscape for a writer, right? You shouldn’t bother looking for a publisher, right? Wrong. Let’s amend that statement. You shouldn’t bother looking for a publisher unless you are comfortable with networking. In addition to owning and operating MyCareerHacker, I continue to embark on my journey as a creative writer. I am the proud co-author of The Book of the Magical Mythical Unicorn, a book that I ..read more

Why Is Professionalism Important in the Workplace?
MyCareerHacker

This post could be extremely short – because professionalism is critical to success. For many young professionals, there’s a sharp dichotomy between their personal and professional lives. While in the office, they’re on point with their tasks and more than capable to fulfill any assignment; on the weekends, their lives are reminiscent of the bad boys and bad girls of reality TV. That’s fine (as long as you don’t put the damning evidence in tagged photos on Facebook), but problems start arising when a laissez-faire attitude is brought back to work on Mondays. What is professionalism? Profession ..read more

Do Internships Help You Get A Job?
MyCareerHacker

There’s a ton of controversy regarding whether internships lead to job offers, or if they are merely unpaid labor. That question has no easy answers applicable to everyone in an internship program or considering undertaking an internship. So, is an internship useful? It can be. Here are a few situations where securing a new internship could prove invaluable to your professional advancement: 1. You’re in college (or graduate school) – Yes, many internships are unpaid. Once you get over the (admittedly annoying) fact that you probably won’t be compensated for your work, you should realize that t ..read more

The Job Search: Orange is the New Black Style

The ladies of Litchfield Correctional may not have a ton of “career experience,” per se, but getting a job can be an emotional rollercoaster, and they know what that’s like. Maybe the old job just wasn’t working out… Or maybe it’s just time for a career change. And trying to find a job right out of school can be terrifying. When you realize it’s time to start the application process, though, you’re like What am I going to write in this stupid cover letter? And I have to write a stand-out résumé? You may get the urge to lie on your résumé…don’t. Then you send in that killer résum ..read more

One Size Does Not Fit All: The Importance of Tailoring Your Résumé

Would you wear a suit on the basketball court? Would you wear a tank top when meeting the President? No, of course not – that’s ridiculous. It’s just as ridiculous as sending the same résumé to multiple employers! Many otherwise qualified job candidates don’t get called in for interviews because their résumés aren’t tailored to the specific job listings to which they’re applying. Regardless of experience and credentials, without making your résumé a match for the company/organization’s needs, you probably won’t be getting that interview. Imagine being on a date with someone who is attractive ..read more

1. In your résumé, cover letter, or in an interview, brevity is key. Get your point across without being long-winded. 2. Sometimes, it’s going to feel like you’ve sent out a billion applications to a billion different jobs, but the war is far from over. The right job is out there: just up your networking; take a fresh look at your résumé/CV and cover letter; and lead your troops into battle again. If you hear “The Rains of Castamere” playing though, walk slowly out of the room and go take a nap. 3. Been out of work for a long time? Whatever the reason—raising a family, a career change, or g ..read more

7 Résumé #FAILS

Your résumé is full of gimmicks, graphics, or glitz. Elle Woods lied to us in Legally Blonde: The only “something special” a pink scented résumé gives is a special hiring manager migraine. You included everything in your “Relevant Work Experience” back to babysitting your neighbors’ kid when you were 14. They seriously don’t. Your résumé is just 5 pages of fluff with no substance, achievements or metrics. Hiring Managers’ eyes glaze over TL;DR YOU DIDN’T PROOFREAD. Come on, guys. This one should be obvious. It’s called grammar. Your email address is sk8rboi29475, 2cute2boot1989, or anythin ..read more

Whether you’re currently unemployed, underemployed, are planning on returning to the workforce after a long time away, or are simply unsatisfied in a current position, the necessity of being able to know how to get a job you like is an invaluable skill. You’ve probably heard the saying that getting a job is a full-time job in itself, and it is…for those job seekers who send résumés and cover letters blindly for every position on Indeed or Monster that’s even remotely applicable to their skills. It’s not uncommon for job hunters who take that approach to have 40-hour workweeks sending out 50 re ..read more
