Athens State University and Calhoun Community College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding designed to help Calhoun students retain prior learning assessment (PLA) credit when they transfer to Athens State after completing their associate degree. Prior Learning Assessment is a process that evaluates knowledge and learning gained outside the classroom. It includes employment, certifications, military training/service, civic activities, and volunteer service. The Athens State University Honors Program recently hosted the inaugural Student Scholarly and Creative Work Showcase. The purpose of the event was to provide students with an opportunity to showcase and present their scholarly and creative work. Twenty-three students from multiple disciplines around campus presented their research or creative work posters at this year’s showcase. The Athens State University Board of Trustees has named Dr. Catherine M. Wehlburg as the 39th president of Athens State University. This appointment marks the third woman to be named as a permanent president – the first in almost a century. Wehlburg succeeds Dr. Philip Way and has served as Interim President since January 2023. Brown Hall Revitalization Under Way

Athens State University held a “groundbreaking” ceremony this morning to kick off the renovation of Brown Hall. This iconic, columned three-story building that stands directly behind Founders Hall, was constructed in 1912 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. It is the second oldest building on the Athens State campus behind Founders Hall. Brown Hall is named in honor of Ms. Florence Brown, the 21-year-old staff member who remained with young women on campus who were too ill to travel as a result of the 1909 typhoid epidemic that claimed the lives of 15 students.
