TSO'd aviation headsets—what does it mean?

While pilots are no strangers to acronyms, this one might strike you as odd. Why would a portable headset fall under the scrutiny of the FAA? After all, neither your flight bag nor your flashlight needs an FAA approval. Why would any gear that is not permanently attached to the aircraft need TSO? The answer for most pilots is that it doesn’t matter. Operating under Part 91 (GA) flying, there is no FAA oversight of what kind of headset is used in the cockpit (if you decide to even use a headset in the first place). The FAA comes into play when you look at Part 121 certification for the airlines ..read more

Most headsets are simple to operate (just plug it in and turn it on if it’s an active noise reduction model), but there are some habits that will extend the life of your headset and keep it operating at peak performance. So you can image our joy when the first truly armored humvee arrived. This beast was brand spanking new. The soldiers in our platoon would go to great lengths to be the lucky one who got to ride with the commander in his fancy wheels with the fancy air conditioning. When the new humvee first arrived, it was brought to the motor pool to get entered into our dispatch system. Basic noise canceling headsets for pilots had been available since the mid-1970s, but hardly any pilots used them. Even those pilots who did wear headsets usually wore basic microphone earpieces, not full coverage models. That included me - Macho Hal would never wear ear protection. I thought headsets were ridiculous and my hearing was just fine.By the 1990s, I was wearing a noise cancelling headset in the cockpit, and it made a big difference. ATC was much easier to understand and I wasn’t as tired after a long flight. Unfortunately, I had waited too long and began to suffer from noise-induce ..read more
