Shim Sham Shimmy! The History of Lindy Hop's Favorite Line Dance
Boulder Swing Dance Blog
by Larisa Hohenboken

“The Shim Sham is a short routine that brings together tappers of all skill levels. No one’s too old, too young, too inexperienced or too accomplished to partake.”—Dance SpiritThe Shim Sham is a popular line dance usually performed to “Tain’t What You Do” by Jimmy Lunceford. If you’ve been to even one dance at Boulder Swing, or indeed at most other venues around the world, you’ve seen it: a line dance where the whole room starts clapping together, then shuffle-stepping. Lindy here, Lindy there, Lindy EVERYWHERE!

My favorite thing about swing dancing (aside from the actual dancing part, of course) is the global community. People are always surprised to hear that you can find a Lindy hop scene pretty much anywhere in the world, but it's true! It's kind of like having a built-in friend group anywhere you go, and it's so much fun to dance in other places. Any time I have moved or gone on trips, the first thing I look up is the local Lindy hop scene. It's how I met all of you wonderful people when I arrived in Colorado!I have also traveled a lot specifically for dancing—most cities hold a big event once or ..read more

This year, the theme was "A Celebration of V-Day," featuring a glowing Eiffel tower, Victory Street, and a Parisian cafe. While the winter ball has had numerous venues, the summer ball takes place ..read more

"That one time, at dance camp..." What I learned at Camp Jitterbug
Boulder Swing Dance Blog
by Larisa Hohenboken

For kids, Memorial Day weekend means the start of summer. For me, the start of summer meant the chance to go away to camp – Camp Jitterbug, that is, in Seattle. If you’ve never traveled for a Lindy event – well, I highly recommend that you do. Immerse yourself in a weekend’s worth of live music, world-class instruction, and tired feet. But though I’ve danced in my fair share of different states, this workshop was different. I hopped on a plane not knowing a soul and left with a completely new understanding of who I was as a dancer and where I belonged in this magnificent world of music and movem ..read more
