General Grant Tree: The Nation’s Christmas Tree
RoadRUNNER Motorcycle Touring & Travel Magazine
by Marisa McInturff

By now, most people throughout the country have put up a Christmas tree in celebration of the upcoming holiday. It’s only fitting that we highlight the General Grant Tree, in Kings Canyon National Park, which was dedicated in April 1926 as the National Christmas Tree. The Nation’s Christmas Tree was named after Ulysses S. Grant in 1867. The General Grant Tree reaches upward to 267 feet tall and is nearly 29 feet in diameter. This giant sequoia is second in size only to the General Sherman Tree which is located in Sequoia National Park and is the world’s largest tree, measured by volume. The G ..read more

Depending on where you live in the U.S., winter often spells the end of the riding season. In some states, bikes are ritually put away and sit dormant for months to wait out the cold and freezing weather. However, there are many states where you can still find riding pleasure even when the temperatures drop. Taking into account that winter demands a certain diligence with tracking weather to avoid unpleasant outings, here are three places where winter rides can be a rewarding adventure. Plan accordingly and you just might be able to shed those winter-time blues. Texas Hill CountryTexas Hill C ..read more

In Pursuit of Wildness: Canyon de Chelly National Monument Canyon de Chelly National Monument is a place that my brother Leo has always talked about: “It is a sacred place. You easily go back in time.” He said that the town of Chinle has food, gas, convenience stores, and ample lodging but encouraged me to find the Cottonwood Campground inside the park. The campground, operated by the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department, is perfect for the night. I normally lay out my camping tarp and sleep on the ground. Not tonight. There are millions of small red ants everywhere. Most of the othe ..read more

Many of us began our love affair with motorcycles by riding in the dirt. Little did I realize what life lessons could be found in that. In 1973, at the age of 15, I was riding a Honda Elsinore 250. It’s hard to believe, but back then, there were a number of riding venues in southern California. One of those was Muntz Cycle Park in the then undeveloped Simi Valley. Muntz had several motocross tracks, hill climbs, and trail riding galore. One weekend, three of my friends and I crammed ourselves and our bikes into a Ford Econoline and headed to Muntz. After spending the day on the various tracks ..read more

Stories From the Road The year 1970 was significant for me. I was 12 years old and, having acquired a used Honda Trail 70, I was a few months into my budding passion for motorcycles. I was content to just docilely tool around the streets and vacant lots of Pacific Palisades, CA. That was until the day my uncle called my dad and asked if “the boys” (my two brothers and me) would be interested in attending a motorcycle race that weekend. Come Sunday, we arrived at my uncle’s house before dawn. My uncle was Swedish and had a friend staying with him from the old country. We piled into their Chevr ..read more

Mid-Atlantic Civil War Trails “The Civil War defined us as what we are and it opened us to being what we became, good and bad things. It was the crossroads of our being, and it was a hell of a crossroads.” —Shelby Foote, The Civil War: A Narrative Between 1861 and 1865, Civil War battles raged across the U.S. Some of the most bitterly contested territory, however, was within a day’s travel from the nation’s capital. Points of interest in this vicinity reflect the depth of our national rupture, when the future of the United States was in peril. Bruce Read, my wife Karen, and I are based in his ..read more
