When I met a lupus patient I’d ask what other autoimmune conditions they had. They’d always ask how I knew they had more than one condition and I used to say it was like lupus having a party and invited all its friends to come along. In other words its sadly not unusual for us to have two or more autoimmune conditions, often referred to as overlap syndrome. About 25 - 30 percent of people with lupus often develop a second or third autoimmune disease. Most patients are diagnosed with their second soon after the first diagnosis of lupus, but for some, overlapping conditions can appear as many a ..read more

We are continually being told to beware of scams with hundreds of new ones popping up every day. The scammers one and only aim is to part desperate people from their money. One of the most prolific scams seem to be concerning ‘cures’ for various medical conditions, including lupus. The scammers actively seek out pages, such as ours where there are thousands of patients gathered, and try to convince them that they can cure various conditions by way of some ‘magic herb’ made by a ‘doctor’. They hope that someone at the end of their tether with their illness might decide to try these so called ..read more

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome operation. My story.

Many, many years ago I was diagnosed by Professor D’Cruz with carpal tunnel syndrome, something that’s quite common amongst lupus patients. It causes tingling, numbness and pain in the hands, fingers and wrists because of pressure being put on the nervous system. Lupus can cause joint pain (arthralgia) and inflammation in and around the joints, resulting in problems like arthritis, tendonitis and as mentioned carpal tunnel syndrome. Initially it was annoying, but eventually it became very problematic in my right hand, I had constant numbness especially when doing repetitive tasks, I’d also wak ..read more

Most of us couldn’t envisage running 6 miles let alone well over 600 miles, but that's what schoolteacher Philip Young is doing for us. He's pledged to run 52 half marathons and has completed 36 already. During July he ran seven half marathons in seven days and in April, ran three halves in seven hours. The total miles he will actually run, once training miles are included, is over 1,000!!! I needed to know more about why Philip took on this enormous challenge for us, so asked him what on earth was going on?! You mention a little about why you decided to fundraise for the Lupus Trust could yo ..read more

An international team of researchers has identified DNA mutations in a gene that senses viral RNA, as a cause of the autoimmune disease lupus, with the finding paving the way for the development of new treatments. This is the first time researchers have identified the TLR7 gene, in its mutated form, causes lupus. The gene TLR7 is programmed to help the immune system guard against viral infections, but in its mutated form it can become aggressive and cause the immune system to attack healthy cells. In their study, published in Nature today, the scientists carried out whole genome sequencing on ..read more

What to do if you think you may have lupus but can’t get a diagnosis

I was misdiagnosed for over 4 years before I was told I had lupus. My reaction? “Thank God, what’s lupus?” That may seem weird but I was continually being told by GP’s there was nothing wrong with me and that it was all in my head. To finally have a doctor believe me and actually give me a definitive diagnosis was a relief, at least I then knew what I was up against. The shocking thing is that this isn’t uncommon, the current time from start of symptoms to diagnosis is estimated as 6 years. In this scenario those of us that have a lupus diagnosis are the ‘lucky’ ones, I am constantly contacte ..read more

loneliness definition /ˈləʊnlɪnɪs/ noun sadness because one has no friends or company. "feelings of depression and loneliness" Of course it’s much more complex than that, I know that people have said they feel lonely when they are married or in a relationship and each one of us suffers loneliness in a different way. Being alone also doesn’t necessarily equate to feeling lonely. People associate loneliness with elderly people living alone, perhaps after their partner passes away but patients with a chronic illness, such as lupus, are another group that also experience loneliness, if you feel ..read more
