October 29, 2021 Santa Cruz storms and Santa Cruz sunshine. Horizontal rain and wind at a beach party. Trees down and big surf and then all calm again, warm, like summer with no tourists. How can this not be my favorite time of year?  Photo by Carla King Bicycle rides along the Wilder Ranch sea cliffs. Lunch at West End. Sunset drinks on the porch sipping Hard Kombucha.  At the Wilder Ranch Historic State Park with writer Kevin Silva.  Plan Scribbles. Made to be Broken. Notes from Overland Expo West 2021

September 27, 2021 I'm just back from Flagstaff, Arizona, where I attended Overland Expo West. It was a last-minute decision to go seeing that the pandemic seems to be under control. It would have been the first West event I've missed, so I was glad to get a chance to go. My friend Kevin had extra room in his car and accommodations, too. All I had to do was book the flights from San Jose. Yay! I love the overlanding and writing communities for connection and opportunities like this.  Arcosanti Busy grasshoppers Sarah Leamy, author Roseann Hanson, author, field arts s ..read more

September 16, 2021 Being so close to Wilder Ranch State Park and the mountain biking trails, I've pressed myself to get back into the sport after a 20-year hiatus. The only beginner-level trail is the flat path along the cliffs and all the other trails are challenging. I still try though, and manage the uphills by getting off the bike. I make it further uphill every time though, which encourages me. It's the downhill stretches that scare me. A natural explorer, I am tempted to head onto the small paths away from the main roads, the fire roads, to see what's there. Often, the single-track d ..read more

A list of solo female motorcycle travelers
Carla King

A couple of weeks ago I posted a call for a list of female solo motorcycle travelers because I felt I'd lost touch. Wow! I knew some of the names, but there are so many more! I feel some satisfaction in the knowledge that I and my contemporaries in writing, blogging, and posting on social media starting in the mid-90s helped demonstrate that yes, indeed, it is safe, at least as safe as it is for a man, to travel the world. The growing number of women who are traveling solo are writing and posting and making videos that multiply that message. You can view the growing list on Instagram, and ple ..read more

A quick review of the TCX Street Air Ace Motorcycle Sneaker boots for summer riding  Just a quick Motorcycle Misadventures Minute... I've been wearing the TCX Street Air Ace boots (disguised as high-top sneakers) this summer and they're so comfy I forget to change out of them.  FIND OUT MORE AND BUY HERE I wear a size 8 or 8.5 women's and the size 39 fit perfectly. To attest to comfort, I got off the bike the other day and spent 3 hours futzing around the house wearing these and my Atwyld Voyager Moto Jeans before I realized I was still wearing moto gear.  Here's where y ..read more

Quick Review of ATWYLD’s Women’s VoyagMotorcycle Skinny Jeans with D30 Armor

Yay for motorcycle-specific skinny jeans! This means I can look like a real human even with highly-effective protection on and off the bike. They're also comfortable and fashionable. I purchased these jeans from the ATWYLD booth at the Sonoma International Motorcycle Show, July 2021.  These Voyager Moto Jeans are black with some nice stitch work, texture, and detail like quilting on the knee and hip. They're 98% cotton and 2% spandex and lined at all impact zones with abrasion-resistant para-aramid fiber.  Here's my short, 60-second review of the jeans so far. Sign up for ..read more

Notes from North Lake Tahoe, Nevada

A few of my more competitive family members enrolled to compete in the Lake Tahoe XTERRA triathlon this last weekend, which made for a great excuse to join them and enjoy a little Tahoe vacation. On Thursday and Friday we happily biked the trails around the lake. It looked like this, but it wouldn't last. From the bike path we can see kayakers also enjoying the summer weather. Squinting into the sun, Justine, Celia, and I enjoy blue skies and blue water on the bike path in North Lake Tahoe Richard leads us astray on an afternoon of mountain biking. A few days later, we'd be driving ..read more

This motorcycle put me in the hospital

We'd ridden together before. In fact, several times, putting around Portland, just touring the city and the surrounding countryside. I'd put about half an hour at a time on her, maybe an hour once or twice. But this trip was going to be longer. I was heading to The Dalles the long way around, riding with the Suffragettes Centennial Ride, up and over the roads that put you on the slopes of scenic Mount Hood. It's a great motorcycle ride. Usually. My brother-in-law's 1995 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy parked under Rowena Crest. A head turner, right? The bike fits... The bike belongs to my brother ..read more

Join me on the Motorcycles and Misfits podcast recorded Sunday August 15, 2021 in Santa Cruz at the Re-Cycle Garage. Listen on SoundCloud. Sunday afternoons are a thing here, highly entertaining and educational, too. Oil pan provided. Tools. Advice. Bring your own essential liquids. The mission of Re-Cycle Santa Cruz is to get old motorcycles back on the road and to teach people how to fix them. They're also happy to help with more modern bikes. Last weekend I rode my KTM 950 SuperMoto over there and mentioned that my gear shift seemed to be getting stiff. So, Liza rummaged around an ..read more
