Targeting Big Trout with the Pig Sticker - Wire Worm
Dupe a Fish
by Todd Jurgensen
5y ago
The Pig Sticker is a fantastic searching pattern when nymphing for trout species that can be tied in just a few seconds. In particular, it is a great point fly for euro or modern style nymphing techniques. The Wire Worm also works well under an indicator. If you like targeting big trout then this pattern is a great starting point. The protein rich aquatic worms always seem to be a tasty treat for those big trout. Squirmy worms, San Juan worms and all the others work great too but they don’t penetrate the water column like the Pig Sticker Wire Worm does ..read more

Fishing and Fly Tying: I Told You So Stone
Dupe a Fish
by Christian Bacasa

The I Told You So Golden Stone is a nymph pattern that attracts fish. Stoneflies are a predominant food source in so many rivers, so this pattern has become a go-to for prospecting. Many fish have been fooled by the I Told You So Golden Stone in many places. Recently I had great success on back to back July trips to Pennsylvania and Montana where the takes were soft and subtle. I saw this guy surfing in a small pocket of edge water. He was tucked in under a low limb on the other side of the river. Fortunately, I was abl ..read more

Fly Tying: Bloody Sowbug Pattern
Dupe a Fish
by Christian Bacasa

Another healthy brown trout taken on the Bloody Sow Bug pattern. This guy was sitting deep under the log behind my right shoulder and was a handful to keep out of the sticks. The Bloody Sowbug Pattern is a nymph pattern that has come to be a pattern I love. For years I fished tailwaters, and everyone around me seemed to be successful with sow bugs. I, however, never had the same experience. After dabbling with a few color variations, I finally found my confidence fly. When fishing waters that are densely populated with sow bugs, this ..read more

Straggle String Fly Tying Material and The S.S. Deep Purple Nymph Pattern
Dupe a Fish

Learn to how to tie the S.S. Deep Purple Nymph Pattern in this YouTube fly tying tutorial by Christian Bacasa The S.S. Depp Purple is a mayfly imitator and is applicable whenever you have smaller mayfly nymphs in the water. I've had particularly good luck with the pattern during callibaetis, PMD, and green drake emergence. The marabou tail seems to drive fish nuts and entices some incredibly aggressive takes. Cutthroat trout, in particular, has been a target species with great success but I've seen similar results with brown trout and rainbow trout during mayfly emergence ..read more

Fly Tying the Blue Beretta Euro Nymph Pattern
Dupe a Fish
by Christian Bacasa

This week I want to highlight a pattern that has become one of my favorites. The Blue Baretta is a Lance Egan inspired pattern. I was having such success with his thread bodied Frenchie that I started working additional color and texture variations. Contrast is the name of the game here. The dark body and contrasting bright collar make for a searching pattern that has been getting slammed on the rivers and lakes. Here you see the ultraviolet fluorescents come through under the UV light ..read more

Video: Monster Brown Trout on the White River in Arkansas
Dupe a Fish
by Christian Bacasa

This past February, we visited the White River to fish with well accomplished Steve Dally and his crew. Dally’s outfit is well known for their ability to tease up big browns, and this trip was no exception. The shop (https://theozarkflyfisher.com/) has everything you’ll need to be successful on the river and the guides, like many outfitters, come with all kinds of specialties. For example, we had guides who had specific techniques for sink lines and others that due to conditions wanted to nymph streamers under an indicator. Honestly, the variety and expertise were welcome. It is always fant ..read more
