Superior Hiking Trail – Day 16

Daily Miles: 20 Total Miles: 253 It rained for several hours last night, but was pretty much done shortly after it got dark.  When we got up, it was no surprise to see several slugs on our gear.  That has been a daily thing in the last week. We got up at 5am again, since we had a lot of miles to do and we had set a time with Beardoh’s friend, Aaron, to pick us up at 5pm. We didn’t really want to have so many miles on our last day, but we are at the mercy of where the campsites are located, since the SHTA prohibits camping outside of the designated campsites.  This is because the ..read more

Daily Miles: 16 Total Miles: 233 We got up in the light, which feels more like a luxury, since we had gotten up in the dark so many times on this trip.  We knew we didn’t have a lot of miles today, but we also wanted to get to camp before 5pm when there was a chance of rain. A lot of the trail today had markers for sections that had been harvested for timber in previous years.  Each set of markers specified the year the section was harvested, going back twenty years or so.  It was pretty amazing to see how quickly an area can fill back in…not necessarily with big trees yet, but ..read more

Daily Miles: 13 Total Miles: 217 We had a really good stay in town yesterday.  Having 24 hours off from hiking really helped us to feel refreshed today. Yesterday, we scheduled a pick-up with the local “Dial a Ride” service for this morning at 10am.  They would pick us up at the hotel and bring us back to the trailhead.  We were glad to have that arranged, since it could be a pretty hard hitch back out to the trail. It was nice to have a relaxed morning today.  We hung out at the free breakfast for awhile and then we all took another shower before packing up. We met folks i ..read more

Daily Miles: 4 Total Miles: 204 We got up at 6:30am this morning even though we didn’t have many miles to walk.  Everyone was anxious to get into town. We backtracked just over a mile to avoid the closed trail further south.  Once we finished backtracking, we started to walk the reroute which was all on roads.  The first mile or so was on a nice gravel road and then we turned onto a paved road.  It was pretty quiet on the road except for a gun range we walked by (someone was out for an early morning target practice session) and a couple county workers mowing the grass on th ..read more

Daily Miles: 20 Total Miles: 200 It rained overnight and we stayed dry in our hammocks.  Even after spending 14 hours laying in our hammocks, we didn’t feel creaky…a definite advantage for the hammocks. We decided to get up a bit later today, figuring we could save ourselves a bit of time hiking in the rain.  The rain had stopped while we packed up, but we knew it was coming back, and that the plants around the trail would be wet, so we all put on our rain gear in anticipation of getting wet. The trail started off right away with a new section of trail as we entered Gooseberry Falls ..read more

Daily Miles: 12 Total Miles: 164 This morning we decided to get up at our normal time of 5:45am.  That way, by the time we were ready to hike, we wouldn’t need our headlamps.  We knew we didn’t need to do big miles today, so it was nice to sleep a bit later. It was so warm and humid last night, that we had only the bare essentials for clothes on.  That meant lots of sticky skin touching the hammock.  It felt like our bodies were glued to the hammock fabric and it was actually hard to move around.  Definitely not a good feeling.  We also spent good chunks of the ni ..read more

Daily Miles: 17 Total Miles: 152 We woke up at 5am again this morning.  Even though we didn’t need to make a lot of miles, like yesterday, we all agreed it would be good to get some morning miles in while it was still relatively cool. We always feel bad when we pack up before the other campers have woken up.  There were at least five other people camped at our campsite.  Our plastic trash compactor bags that we use as pack liners make noise as we pack, regardless of how careful we are.  This morning, Beardoh accidentally stepped on a water bottle, and it made quite a loud n ..read more

Daily Miles: 24 Total Miles: 135 Last night we realized that we had identified the wrong road for accessing our next trail town (Silver Bay).  The schedule we had put us about 10 miles short.  Unfortunately that meant that we would need to do at least one big day to get us back on track.  It was just bad luck that this long day coincided with the heat wave. Last night it never really cooled off.  It was probably the warmest night of camping for us since canoeing the Mississippi River.  We got up at 5am, packed up in the dark and then started hiking at 5:30am with our h ..read more

Daily Miles: 16 Total Miles: 111 The hotel had a free breakfast this morning that was really great.  We met up for breakfast at 7am and tried not to overeat.  We have all been super happy with our stay at the AmericInn hotel. At 8am, we headed out with Scout back to the trail.  We were hiking by 8:15am, with blue skies and cool air.  The trail started out quite different, butting up to tall rock faces.  We hadn’t seen that earlier on the trail, but it was really cool. At one point, we took a short spur trail to see a waterfall on the Temperance River.  When we loo ..read more

Daily Miles: 12 Total Miles: 173 It was a slow start to the day today.  We decided to wake up without alarms since we only had about 12 miles to do before being picked up at 2:30pm by the trail angel, Carrie.  It was beautiful at camp this morning.  Perfect temperatures and great views. Our 17 mile dry spell ended after a short 1.5 miles this morning.  It was a really nice spring that we remembered from our other hikes on the TRT.  Smiles and Mismatch were already at the spring, so we chatted with them for a bit. When we went to get back on the trail, we didn’t realize ..read more
