You might appreciate 2wd and 4wd roads on routes because of a wide corridor, no blow downs, easy navigation, a moment to zone out, forward progress, creative puke… “Why such low mileage?” (20 mile days) a friend asks me while I’m hiking the Te Araroa. She has yet to experience tread that tries to bend and fold you. If I cannot put that “30” mile mark in my daily blog, what does it matter? Sub 30…what a shame!  They’ve started long distance hiking at a time of FKT’s, Wild, sponsorship, pretty faces…thru-hiking is becoming mainstream. You don’t have to be an accomplished thru-hiker to be “spon ..read more

Whenever I travel alone I attract lots of attention…because I’m a woman and a vagabond. I think some people give me more respect than they would a male vagabond. It also helps that I look like Punky Brewster. Guys with tattoos with names like “Grizzly” and guys who’ve out-witted Hell’s Angels and guys with serious business to attend to, turn into putty when they find out what I’m doing. “You’re the bravest Little Gal I’ve ever met!” and “You’ve got bigger balls than me!” and “You’re not carrying a gun? Hell I’d carry a gun!” Anyway, I’m no braver than my male counterparts. Because I’m a woma ..read more

San Mateo Mountains  I’m singing along to some god awful song when I see a bear cub run across the trail. I rip out my headphones and pause. I know what’s about to happen… I yell “Hey Bear!”  Sure enough, Mama Bear bluff charges me, but sort of politely just to say “Get out of here!”  Yes Ma’am. I turn and walk the other direction listening for her…phew she’s not following…wait a couple minutes…f$&@ what if there’s a carcass?  When I proceed I make lots of noise, Ca Caws and Warrior Princess calls.  White Creek Admin Cabin Every little noise wakes me up. Tonight some deer or elk? mak ..read more

May 5, 2015 Mountainair  Dear Readers,  Sorry I’ve left you hanging! I haven’t had a day off since I went to the CDT kick-off beginning of April. Right now I’m 100 miles from Albuquerque, the end of this route. There’s a lot to say and it’s not all going to happen now in this post. First, I want to say that just because I was sexually harassed along the route doesn’t mean you should not hike the GET alone. There are always inherent risks while hiking alone, sexual harassment is one of them. I’ve been sexually harassed on the Pacific Crest Trail too. Women are sexually harassed everywhere, i ..read more

April 17, 2015 After the town of Safford, Arizona the route crosses a plot of private agricultural land near the Gila River.  I’ve never had any problems with land owners or managers. In New Zealand, a farm manager offered me a meal and a place to stay. In the States, ranchers come out to say Hello. On this route, a rancher offered me a place to crash.  Today I was scared though because a farm’s employee sexually harassed me.  I was walking a dirt road between plots, removed from civilization, when I spot a John Deere tractor approach me from behind. I assume it’s the farm manager coming to se ..read more

April 13, 2015  I took a hiatus from the GET and went to the first annual CDT kick-off event in Silver City, New Mexico. I had too many beers and met all the sexy thru-hiking celebrities. Then “All Good” drove me back to Mammoth and I resumed my hike.     The night before I enter Aravaipa Canyon, Arizona’s “Little Grand Canyon,” I meet a guy, who’s ears I like, at the Bradenburg Ranger Station and he’s about to embark on a Skurka backpacking trip. I ask him if he’s on a rumspringa and then talk shit about Skurka. He’s put off.  Well anyway, here’s Aravaipa!     Half way through I pass a tree t ..read more

April 7, 2015 The Grand Enchantment Trail uses the Arizona Trail for about 70 miles but otherwise it’s pretty obscure. To get from Phoenix to Albuquerque, the route uses washes, drainages, old trails, and dirt roads. Sometimes the route is marked by cairns or blue tape, but mostly you can’t have your head up your ass. Today I had my head up my ass. I miss my turn off into a wash and hike 3 miles down the wide corridor that is the Arizona Trail.   wrong way, still pretty  I am almost out of water.   Either I continue down the AZT and meet up with the GET at the Gila River or hike back. Either ..read more

April 6, 2015 The town of Superior is my first resupply and its a vague suggestion of a town. Close to a highway, it’s a place you might stop just to pee or fill up gas.  The surrounding area is stunning! But mining is heavy here. Thankfully they can’t get at Picketpost Mountain.   Picketpost Mountain  I wanted to get in and out quick but was curbed by a local- the toothless cowboy barfly. He knew about all sorts of things. I listened to him talk about mining, mining safety, mining protests, mining accidents, OSHA, the Apache Leap, brothels he’s been to, a swingers club he happened upon, tryin ..read more

April 4, 2015 An old neighbor from my Ohio adolescense  drops me off at the Lost Dutchman’s trail west of Phoenix around noon. This is the start of the Grand Enchantment “Trail” for those heading East to Albuquerque.  Lost Dutchman’s trailhead The route begins in the Superstition Mountains. Legend has it there’s a hidden mine near Weaver’s Needle with a shit load of gold, and some people have died trying to find it. You can read more about it here. Weaver’s Needle “Out for the night?” a man asks in passing. “No, Albuquerque!” He pauses and appears bewildered. But I’m bewildered too, one momen ..read more
