These past few months life has kind of been flipped on its head for my family and I which has prevented me from doing much in terms of photography. What time I did manage to get was restricted to evening shooting. Which as you can guess from the title of this blog I don’t really like. Well I cant say I don’t like evening shooting as lets be honest anytime out in the field with the camera is great. But that said there are reasons why I love my morning outings which I will list below: 1. Time Alone - Probably one of the biggest advantages I find with morning time photography especially that firs ..read more

It feels like forever since I wrote a blog post so I apologize for that but with everything going on in the world and all the “new” norms we have to adapt to it has thrown me off my usual routines. Heading into April I have been super pumped about one subject which is the Northern Pintail. About two years ago while out for a drive with my family I noticed a small pond (which will remain unnamed) that a number of pairs of Pintail were hanging out in. It caught me by surprise because I had never seen Pintails in the pond before. I made a few attempted that year at photographing them and manage t ..read more

When we think of great photography situations most of us thinking of those first moments of light in the morning or those last rays of sun in the evening. Having that warm glow on our subjects just makings the images so special and after capturing those images the day prior with the Willow Ptarmigan I was thinking that there was no way I could top those images. After two days of cloudy weather photography with these balls of white fluff on the snow I came to realize that it isn’t all about the warm glow all the sun and that there are subjects that just look amazing in overcast light ..read more

I have known my father in-law for about 10 years now and we have spent a lot of time together out searching for wildlife in and around the Terrenceville area (where he is from). During those outings he has shared numerous stories with me about when he was younger and the wildlife that roamed the barrens and hill sides surrounding the town. He spoke of herds of Woodland Caribou so large it looked as those the hills were moving. He also talked about Willow Ptarmigan and how they would be spotted on very small ridge and sitting in the alder/ juniper trees feeding. Though I have spent the past 10 ..read more

A couple weeks ago I made an attempt to photograph the Purple Sandpiper flock that hangs out along the coastline at Cape Spear, Newfoundland. Sadly during that outing the waves were too intense for the Purples to find a safe place to land in their usual spots so unfortunately I came away with nothing. When I returned home and looked back at my previous images of Purple Sandpipers I realized it had been 5 years since I had last photographed them. This light a fire under me and I was now on a missing to photograph them once again. After a two week long flu/cold I finally got the energy to head b ..read more

Like many Wildlife Photographers I dream of flying to remote locations to see and photography iconic and/or rare species; explore new locations for the first time and experience those magical moments we think about daily. But sadly that is not my reality…and it is not the reality of many. For myself I have a full time gov’t job, a family which includes a 7 year old daughter and lots of bills/responsibilities to take care. Many of these things are the reason I can’t travel the world but not being able to travel has opened my eyes to one very very important element to creating great images is…bu ..read more

Boy oh Boy where has this year gone? Time just seems to be going faster and faster each year. With that said though this year has been filled full of amazing encounters, learning experiences and some new friends made along the way. This is the time where I show case what I feel are my Top 12 (because I couldn’t narrow it down to 10) images of the year and these images are not solely based on image quality but often based on the experience as a whole. This year I will also be showing the images more or less in the order they were taken; meaning I will start from last January and work my way thr ..read more

I have been fortunate so far this Fall to have come away with a lot of great photographic opportunities with the waterfowl that show up here on the island of Newfoundland. I have captured many images of various species surrounded in peak Autumn colors like the ones you see below: But it was during one of my recent outings that got me thinking about fear and how we often use various excuses to not purse an idea or a concept or to even get up early in the morning to head out into the field. I had been showing a photography bu ..read more

Like many things in life I feel there are stages and evolution with photography that we all go through. I remember when I first started in Wildlife Photography it was all about getting close to my subjects and capturing those detailed portraits. Don’t get me wrong I still love to capture that style of image but over the past 2 years I have slowly grown an obsession and a love for the more loose/wider compositions. Ones that show more of the environment but yet still showcases your subject in a beautiful and pleasing way. In my eyes one of the best bird photographers out there that achieves thi ..read more

This will probably be a short blog post but one I wanted to share it anyways as this past weekend I was reminded about the importance of patience and sticking with an idea or plan even when things might seem like they wont work out. This weekend was nothing but clear skies in the forecast which generally I dislike but when you have areas like Virginia Lake where the first rays of light are unobstructed you look forward to those mornings. My buddy Russ Lynch and I headed out to the lake on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday we were treated to some decent light and I was able to capture some ima ..read more
