A change of direction for Table Under a Tree

Yes, we wanted to share with you that we have decided to end our weekly delivery service. It is big news, a least for us and not a decision we’ve come to lightly. To be clear, this is a change of direction and not a closure of the business. When our family started Table Under a Tree back in 2018 we offered various food and farm focused visitor experiences. While COVID saw us reconfigure Table with the support of our local customers – largely through the deliveries, but still through our tours – the essence of the business remained the same. We tried to share the story of the real people behind ..read more

We’ve all got wet feet, but that doesn’t make us ducks! The rain has been prolific over summer and it does mean that growing cycles for produce in the Northern Rivers are a little out of whack this autumn. But don’t let that worry you, because there is an abundance of things to enjoy with plenty of seasonal favourites coming along in the next few months. Let’s start with the fruit you’ll enjoy through this season: Apples from Stanthorpe are fantastic, with galas pumping out at the moment. The first of the season’s pears have just arrived too, so plenty of snacking and baking options there as ..read more

Does seasonal and local matter?
Table Under a Tree

Real food, from real people at real places. That’s the mantra that we repeat every day at Table Under a Tree. But does that mean the food in question always has to be in season and always come from small-scale producers near you? Why not enjoy early season mangoes freighted from Far North Queensland? Why not make the most of hothouse tomatoes year round? What’s wrong with buying oranges imported from California? Or perhaps a bottle of French Champagne? In isolation, the answer to those questions could be nothing; no problem; peel away; and cheers. The real issue emerges when you think about th ..read more

We live in times, at least in the western world, where food is equal parts entertainment, therapy and escape. We’ve all got the lingo down pat, and know our mise en place from our mirepoix. Plating up is a thing; chefs are celebrities; and social media is swamped by food trends that defy belief. It seems that cooking is no longer mere functionality. In lots of ways, that’s a trend to be grateful for. It’s gotten lots of people out of the drive-through and into the kitchen, cooking up a storm for themselves and for their family and friends. We’ve reconnected with that uplifting feeling of prepa ..read more

Hard to believe that this time last year we were still in drought; while just this morning I read reports of a bumper grain harvest expected for broad-acre farmers this season. Things go in cycles, and the Northern Rivers is no exception. What may have been abundant and flavour-packed one year, may not be the next. So to help you think about what to look out for at local farmer’s markets this summer, here’s a few thoughts on what to look out for at the farmer’s markets over summer. Let’s start with fruit: Blueberries have had a bumper season this year. Plump and beautiful. But it will come to ..read more

Writing our regular round-up of things to do in the Northern Rivers is something I always enjoy. There’s often something quirky, usually something challenging, and always things that reflect this community’s uniqueness! So with no claim to completeness, here some suggestions of great things locals and visitors alike will enjoy this December and January: Flicks in the Field returns to Bangalow on 11-12 December. Relive your childhood and enjoy a drive-in movie. Friday night is for the family (Elf is showing) while Saturday night is a real throwback (Gremlins). While most of the local ..read more

Ten tips for storing fruits and vegetables so they last longer
Table Under a Tree

We’ve all been there… Come home from a farmer’s market or greengrocer with an armful of fresh produce and shoved it away without much thought, only to find it wilted, spotty, mushy (or worse) by the time we actually come to use it! So how do you store your produce to stop that from happening? While nothing is foolproof, here’s the tips I’ve learned along the way to give you the best chance to enjoy fruits and veggies in their best condition. Store like with like. Lots of fruits and vegetables release ethylene, a gas that will ripen produce. Things like bananas are notorious for this, which is ..read more
