Are you over 60 and feeling frustrated with your running?  Getting slow, stiff and constantly dealing with pain and injuries? If so, stay tuned for a different approach I think will help you greatly. More than 30 years ago, Dr. Phil Maffetone started training elite runners using low heart rates for most of their runs. After many successes, he wrote a book called "The Big Book of Endurance and Training", outlining his method called "Maffetone Training". Maffetone Training is perfect for us older runners, building our aerobic capacity to add power and speed to our running without ..read more

Did you know your one mile running time at the age of 50 can predict how long you live?   That is just one of the gems in Mark Sisson's just released book "Keto for Life". This book is not just another one of those fad Keto diet books, but rather a comprehensive handbook for those who want to experience more freedom, Independence and vitality as they age.   I originally got interested in longevity after my father moved to an assisted living facility at the age of 96 to recover from a surgery. Although he was the oldest resident at the facility, he was about the only one who coul ..read more

Don't Just Focus On Your Running

Just when you think you have everything figured out, you get thrown for a loop! That's what I wanted to share with you today.  The #2 Key to longevity is Moving. Now that's something we runners have nailed down. We spend considerable time obsessing over our workouts and mileage so moving isn't an issue.  But I recently learned from Dr. Tommy Wood that our obsession with our cardio workouts is the least effective part of the movement key. Studies show that if you get a good run workout in, but spend the rest of your time sitting or not moving either because of work or as a reward ..read more

Running is one of the best activities for longevity, but not for what you may think. Sure, aerobic activity and time outside has many benefits, but people can get many of those same benefits from walking or hiking. You see, you don't need that much higher level aerobic activity for longevity's sake.  The true key for longevity from running is sprinting! Although, sadly, not many runners sprint. There are several reasons you should be sprinting: Sprinting improves your capillaries and increases cellular  mitochondria, building your aerobic capacity. Sprinting triggers adaptive h ..read more

This is the second in a 3 part series on marathon training following Forever Runner principals. Last week, I talked about marathon base training. It was all about running slow with biweekly sprinting and getting real good at 2 hour runs. Today i’ll go over marathon training plans. Most marathon training plans are 16 to 18+ weeks long. There are two main problems with most popular training plans out there if you do not want to get injured and want to be totally rested and energized at the start. 1) They have you run too fast. 2)  They include too much speedwork. But they do provide a prove ..read more

This is going to the the first in a 3 part series on marathon training following Forever Runner principals. Today, let's talk about marathon base training. We all know that having a proper base is essential to successful marathon training. But how do you know if you've done enough? An easy way to calculate it for yourself is how close your MAF training pace is to your projected marathon pace. Dr. Maffetone analyzed 1,000's of his runner's marathon results and found that most successful finishers ran at a pace about 20 seconds per mile faster than their MAF training pace.  So if you your M ..read more

Just Running won't make you healthy and fit. Let me explain... Many people treat running as their daily "workout". One and done. But the reality is, if you sit in an office all day, after work get your run in, then sit on the couch the rest of the night, you haven't accomplished anything for your fitness and health. That's why the 3rd principal in the Forever Runner Method is Move & Mobilize. Exercise is just like eating. Every day you eat a healthy diet and take some vitamins to supplement your nutrition. Think of running the same way. Throughout your day, you are cons ..read more

Who are you known as?

Funny how labels work. What I mean by labels, is what you are known as. For most of us, we are known as "Runners". And if someone calls us a runner, we smile knowing that we've earned that label from putting in the miles for many years. A couple of weeks ago, a co-worker called me a "Jogger" and my face contorted, I straighten and turned and immediately corrected him, "No, I'm a Runner!". After all, I've put in a lot of work to become a runner and I don't associate with my visual of a 1980's jogger.  So here's why I brought this up.  As I keep working wi ..read more

This week I listened to a great Brad Kerns podcast featuring the oldest living barber in the USA. Brad was traveling to New York and stopped to get a haircut and an interview. He was in both World War 1 and World War 2, was married for 60 years and has outlived his wife, family and friends. He lives alone, does all his own shopping and meals, drives to the mall 5 days a week for work and puts in 40 hours per week.  He has no secret diet or exercise routine, but he does have two beliefs he swears by: 1 ..read more
