“Sullivan’s Island—A more comfortable place could not be found,” said Lt. George Dixon. Dixon was the commanding officer of the H.L. Hunley, the Confederate submarine whose base of operations was at Breach Inlet in 1864. The crew that worked on the submarine was based in Mount Pleasant. Dorothea Benton Frank: Remembering a Lowcountry Literary Legend
Sullivan's Island Magazine
by Sullivan's Island Magazine

To borrow from — and paraphrase — author Erich Segal, “What do you say about a beloved Lowcountry novelist who died?” In the case of the recent passing of Dorothea Benton Frank, the answer is simply, “A great deal.” Among the 20 New York Times best-selling books she has written since 2000 — one every year — 11 were set in and showcased the Lowcountry, starting with her debut novel, “Sullivan’s Island,” which eventually sold over a million copies and has been translated into 10 languages. Her final novel, “Queen Bee,” published in May 2019, rose to No. 2 on the chart. Frank, who passed away on ..read more

Our story on the Panama mount uncovered near Fort Moultrie by the waves spawned by Hurricane Florence drew lots of attention from our readers. It seems as though the relics of the past, as well as the area’s long history as a major port and ships that have been sunk in battle and storms stir the imagination of Lowcountry residents. The story’s post on Mount Pleasant Magazine’s Facebook page reached 19,784 people, it had 220 shares and had 3,800 click throughs – inspiring us to further the conversation. The average Jan. 1 morning in the Lowcountry consists of adults nursing their hangovers and watching bowl games. Others show up at the gym to begin working on their New Year’s resolutions. But a few hundred others – sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the weather – don their bathing suits and flock to Dunleavy’s Pub to start the New Year off right: by parading around in ridiculous costumes and running into a relatively freezing ocean, surrounded by a thousand or so onlookers. Dunleavy’s Polar Bear Plunge informally started about 25 years ago and has grown into a legendary annual occa ..read more

History Unearthed: Hurricane Tides Reveal Defense Battery
Sullivan's Island Magazine

Sullivan’s Island has another beach attraction. The relentless surge of the ocean toward shore has almost completely uncovered a circa World War II coastal defense battery, a Panama mount that was designed to be outfitted with 155-mm artillery guns to protect the Charleston harbor and the coastline in general from attack by sea. Gary Alexander, a national park ranger at Fort Moultrie, said the long-abandoned battery had been partially visible, but the recent hurricane ripped away much of the sand that was covering the mini-fortification. The mounts were installed in what was called a sub-post ..read more
