Does this sound familiar? “Hey sweetie, brush your teeth! Did you brush your teeth? C’mon, just brush your teeth. Pleeeeeeeeease brush your teeth. Brush. Your. Teeth. BRUSH YOUR TEETHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!” And even after all that begging and cajoling, you’re STILL not sure if your kid brushed!!! So you sniff their breath. You touch their toothbrush to see if it’s wet. And even if they did get the brush wet, you’re not sure if it ever made it into their mouths because there’s more toothpaste all over the sink and walls than could have possibly gone on their teeth. Well, guess what?! I just discove ..read more

Taking Control of Your Kid’s Asthma
My Life Suckers

The first time I saw my daughter in an N95 mask wasn’t during the pandemic. It was in the car, racing down the 101 freeway, heading south, desperately seeking air she could breathe. The wildfires in Northern California were raging and the air was orange. Apocalyptic orange. And my asthmatic child was gasping for air. My daughter was first diagnosed with asthma at age 7. She was having regular bouts of wheezing and chest tightness and was prescribed two inhalers by her pediatrician. A steroidal one and one with the medication albuterol. When I asked the doctor how she developed asthma, assumi ..read more

It’s Been One Year “One Week” Parody
My Life Suckers

It’s been a year. A year since school was canceled. A year since we gathered. A year since we ate in a restaurant. A year since we traveled. A year since we left the house without trepidation … and a mask. It’s been a hell of a year. It’s been a year in which I haven’t really been able to create. Partially because of the mental fatigue of it all. I’m too exhausted to even think, let alone make music videos. The homeschooling. The constantness of everyone home ALL. THE. TIME. The messes. The repeated requests for snacks. It’s all a LOT! I think it’s going to take us years to recover and unpac ..read more

You Deserve It
My Life Suckers

As a social media creator, I’ve had more than my share of mean comments. I’ve received death threats, rape threats and constant harassment. What’s my crime? I make silly parenting videos. When my first video “What Does the Kid Say” went viral, it was posted on Reddit Cringe and I was subject to incredibly vile hatred. I was told I was the reason “terrorists hate America.” I was the reason “people shoot school children.” I was told to kill myself. And when I tried to defend myself, I was told, “You deserve it.” I wasn’t trying to be a social media influencer when I made that first video. Soci ..read more

I can’t work. Every time I turn my attention to my career these days, I get interrupted. My son can’t find his social studies printout or the zoom link for Spanish class won’t work or the internet is down or someone needs a snack. The interruptions are endless. For the past 15 years I’ve had the luxury of working from home. First as a writer and editor for Nickelodeon’s parenting website and now as a creator for MyLifeSuckers. I feel so lucky to have been able to simultaneously fulfill my creative dreams and career goals, and be there for school pick-ups and sick days. I’m like a working sta ..read more

Talking Myself Off the Ledge
My Life Suckers

Kiddo and I found ourselves on our own for dinner the other night. I was exhausted and I was not cooking. He happily agreed and off to the local burrito place we went. Now before you say, “HE EATS BURRITOS???” calm down. He eats plain cheese quesadillas which he calls “pizza” because they are melted cheese on a something crust-like cut into triangles. I mean, he’s got a point. It’s particularly fun when we go to order and he yells, “PIZZA” and I then have do Kiddo-to-English translation to the confused server. While we were tucking in, I noticed a car pull up in front of the j ..read more
