Tea?

I can go years without a tea urge, but I recently came by some cinnamon sticks from a specialty store and it's revived some interest. I thought I had given away my Revereware tea kettle and was checking out a replacement. I was shocked that a replacement Revereware was over a hundred dollars on Amazon, but just tonight I found the kettle. I think the tea ball for loose tea is gone. Any tea preferences to recommend or discuss? I'm not much on herbal teas and started with a basic green tea. At one time I acquired a gift of Puer tea fresh from China which I thought was exceptional and have some ..read more

Price of ground beef

The drought in western states was a big factor in the reduction of cattle herds. Now the prices of live cattle as well as ground beef are higher than ever. Substitutes for beef make sense to me. I am making tacos for dinner tonight, using TVP I bought 2 years ago. It is going to be yummy. I have an oregano plant growing on the sun porch... I am using thin-cut oregano leaves for seasoning along with the usual dry spices ..read more

Where do you stand on leftovers?

I don't know whether this falls under "Food & Recipes," "Frugality," or "Environment. Do you use leftovers? When my brother and I went to visit our other brother in MN in the summer, we were talking about using up the previous nights dinner that night and my SIL said "J doesn't eat leftovers." And I asked my brother, "You don't?" and he made a "Yuck!" face. This week we are in NJ helping my son with the 2 boys while his wife is on a business trip, and they also tend not to eat leftovers. DH and I definitely try to eat everything, and incorporate small bits of leftovers into the next ni ..read more

Substitute for Sambol Oelek chili paste

On this website, we have talked about the tragedy of Huy Fong chili paste being unavailable due to a crop failure. I tried the Sambal Olek from a competitor and it was not good. Avoid! But I did find a hot sauce that I like quite a bit, yes, it has a different taste. It’s not as hot. but I am liking it. It is Sirachi hot sauce made with yellow chili peppers. The brand is “three mountains brand.” B392EBA8-0431-4AB8-841B-4364A30C62E2.jpg Attached Images B392EBA8-0431-4AB8-841B-4364A30C62E2.jpg (11.6 KB) 115461D4-ED02-472A-B65F-CE3677262CF8.jpg (64.1 KB ..read more

Right now I don’t want to cook and the heat/humidity has taken away a lot of my appetite. I’ll take two pouches of tuna (in water), a bit of Miracle Whip, dill pickle relish, and salt and pepper. I eat it with skme good whole grain crackers I found on Amazon. Very satisfying. What’s your favorite non-cook summer meal? With minimal chopping, too ..read more

Has anyone here tried any of the various apps for tracking what food you have? I just downloaded one called Pantry Check and have spent the past hour scanning bar codes of everything we have that is unopened and assigning them a location. I'm hoping it will help us use up some of the stuff we have an overabundance of and make it easier to go shopping since I'll be able to check if I'm at the store and get an idea to make something whether or not we have the ingredients ..read more

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/srirach...us%20Sriracha. A severe drought caused shortage of red chili peppers in Mexico, and Huy Fong foods cannot manufacture Sambel Olek, Sirachi sauce, chili garlic paste. I am devastated. I have visited three stores and there is no supply anywhere. Walmart is selling 8 ounce bottles for $28. Usually they are $5 ish. So I ended up buying hot yellow chili sauce. We shall see how that works ..read more
