Re-finding my style

I couldn’t find a journal pretty enough, so I découpaged my own. Hello friends! This post is long overdue. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed I’ve been somewhat absent over the last couple of weeks. It’s been something of a rough winter (and school year, if I’m honest) and I found my social media consumption was not helping my mood. I decided a while ago to take a bit of a break and it’s actually been fantastic. I’ve also decided to focus more of my energy on this blog than on Instagram posts as the Instagram algorithm is a constantly moving target and any content I make there ..read more

I’ve written another chapter of my book on wardrobe planning for sewists (and anyone, really) and posted it on Patreon. This one is all about silhouette and fit and figuring out what clothes you’ll like on your body before you sew them. Check it out on Patreon! I also did a cute reel on Instagram if you want a quickie primer. Enjoy ..read more

Best and Worst of 2022

Every year, I like to do a little review of my makes so I can reflect on what worked for me and what definitely didn’t. Here’s how this year went! The Best The ruffly Hannah Wrap Skirt. I made this one late in the year, but it’s already got to be one of my most worn garments. I don’t usually wear colours or prints on the bottom so it’s really fun to wear this skirt. The Women’s Essential Tee. It blows my mind that I didn’t have a basic white tee before this. I love everything about it except how sheer it is, so I’ll be trying to find more opaque white jersey soon so I can make another I’ll f ..read more

Teacher gifts to sew
Couturious Blog

December is fast approaching which means that makers are trying to get their ducks in a row for holiday crafting. Today I’m going to give you ideas for two scrap-busting gift ideas to give to your kids’ teachers, but I wanted to talk about teacher gifts in general for a quick moment first. I’ve been teaching for about ten years and mostly in schools with families who are comfortable financially. As a result, I have gotten sooooooo many gifts and can tell you that teachers don’t need a gift. Honestly. I very legitimately would prefer a handwritten note or craft from your kid. I have a special f ..read more

A guide to sewing your own Classic, Core Capsule
Couturious Blog

Me Made May was really informative for me this year. My goal was to emulate the cute capsule wardrobes I see on Pinterest and start re-wearing my clothes before washing by using them in more than one outfit a week. To say this has been a game-changer would be an understatement. I’ve reduced my personal laundry by half (still working on the rest of my family) and re-discovered the joy of finding creative ways to wear my clothes. I’ve realized that I don’t need duplicates of things and can instead just make it once and wear it constantly (For example, I gifted two of my four pony tanks to my Sis ..read more

Me-made Summer Vacation capsule 2022

For the last few months, I’ve been experimenting with re-wearing my garments several times before washing them. I was originally inspired by the cute capsule wardrobes I saw on Pinterest that always baffled me with how few tops they included. This summer, I put one of these capsules to the test during our two-week road trip around Ontario. Here’s what I brought and how everything fared. In my suitcase: Plaid Archer Button up by Grainline Studios Sheer Roscoe dress by True Bias (as a beach cover up) psss I did a thorough sew-along blog on my patreon for this one! Black biker shorts (rtw) Hacke ..read more

Self-drafted shirred sun dress (no pattern!)

I’ve gotten a lot of question about the shirred dress I sort of improvised last week so I thought I would give you a run-down of what I did. Be warned that I figured out a lot of this on the fly and this is in no way a detailed tutorial. That said, it was pretty easy to put together and you can totally do it to! The Fabric Everything I read about shirring said that it works best on lightweight fabrics. I used a lightweight linen I picked up at Blackbird fabrics about two weeks ago with a thick vertical stripe. It worked very well and I highly recommend it in general but also for a shirred dres ..read more

Vacation Reads for Sewists

After making clothes, my favourite thing to do is probably read about clothes. I know a lot of us are going away on holiday, so I thought this a good time to do a round up of my favourite books about clothes and sewing. This list is a combination of books I’ve read or ones I’ve got on my list. Here goes! The Paris Dressmaker by Kristy Cambron. This one is set in occupied Paris and features a dressmaker for Chanel who becomes involved in the resistance. The Last Collection by Jeanne Mackin. This book gives a fictionalized account of the rivalry between Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli through ..read more

Hey pals! I’m writing to give you a good news update – I’m bringing back this long-neglected blog! For a while, I focused most of my attention on Instagram because that’s what I found most fun. My favourite part of the online sewing community is having conversations and making friends and I’m finding that is happening less and less on IG, so I’m going to be posting on here more as well as my soon-to-come Patreon. The other main reason is that I often like to write more than an Instagram caption will allow me and I find it hard to refer people back to old posts. I know y’all like tutorials and ..read more

Coming up in 2022

Hey pals! This blog has been somewhat neglected lately and I wanted to tell you why. I’ve been focusing on Instagram content lately because I find it easier and find I connect with more people that way. Blogging is pretty onerous and I haven’t had the time lately. BUT! I’ve got some big plans for sewing and social media in 2022. I’ve applied for a partial leave of absence for next school year. My hope is to work 4 days a week at the school and have the fifth day to work on sewing and content creation. I’ve also decided to work on monetizing content that takes more time and effort to create. I ..read more
