No points scored if you've guessed we're talking about 5 (with a good bit of 4 thrown in as it's pretty essential to your function.) A lot of the time when people talk about the 'core' or core exercises, they mean abs and mostly crunches. When I talk about the core, I mean everything from your ribs to pelvis. If you've heard me talk about the pelvic floor and how it doesn't really work to focus on it as a muscle in isolation, then you'll not be hugely surprised if I say there's not much point in just focussing on your abs. Contexts to explore: What are you aiming to do? What goes on around the ..read more

SNEEZE WEE Although common, it's not normal to wet yourself when you sneeze. This essentially means when your bladder has urine in it, your pelvic floor is not strong enough to withstand the downward forces produced by said sneeze. You may be happy to tolerate it for now, thinking you only have a few months left of your pregnancy, so what's the point doing much ..read more

Your Post-Birth Body

As your baby slowly grew, you adapted to carrying them in your body; from something noone else would notice to a pronounced bump that the general public might have commented on or even touched (without asking?! hands off thank you very much!). After birth, the shift is not so obviously gradual and sometimes there's an expectation to 'snap back' into your former self or shape. For most women, this is not what happens. What is normal? It can be totally normal to look a bit pregnant for a while afterward, with a bit of a bump still there. In those first 6 weeks your uterus will gradually shrink ..read more

Your body and your mind are not separate entities - they are one, they are you. So in order to relax the mind, noticing and allowing the body to relax is essential. In pregnancy yoga we're often focused on the journey towards birth; and rightly so as being mentally and physically prepared for labour has great benefits in terms of feeling more relaxed, physically prepared and confident. This naturally takes us to the importance of relaxing the pelvic floor - a place that we're more used to training to upwards and in; stopping us from going to the toilet at unwanted moments* as well as using dur ..read more
