Anyone here had success shot peening/pinning magnesium before to increase surface hardness? If so howd you do it? Tried sand blasting but the media was quite small. Obviously no effect and super increased corrosion. submitted by /u/maderpater [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Does this look normal?

This is a blade I bought from traditional philipino weapons. The tip snapped off while cutting and I've never seen a dark spot in steel grain like this before. The steel they use is 5160 mixed with D2, but I don't know much more than that. submitted by /u/DTownsend0562 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Dry ice blasted aluminum parts turned out too white. I’m told this is the raw color of the aluminum.

They told me to spray it with WD40 to prevent corrosion, and that it’ll darken with heat cycles to look the way it’s supposed to. Attached are before and after pics. Is this really how raw aluminum behaves? Will it regain its silverish color after heat cycling in the engine bay? submitted by /u/hlinhd [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Ti grade 1 - Metallography

Hi, I’m looking for input on the sample prep/metallography for observing the microstructure in grade 1 or 2 titanium. Currently I’m using a process outlined by Buehler and Vander Voort (coarse grit 320/400, 9 um polish, 0.05 colloidal silica 0.05 um + 30 % hydrogen peroxide on the final polish) where I’m getting a good polish, the sample is very flat, and I can faintly see the microstructure optically. If I then do a swab etch with Kroll’s (even for just 1 second) it appears to over etch, or just doesn’t really evenly etch/attack. Anyways, I was hoping to get some tips from anyone that has ex ..read more

Hi Everybody! I am looking for some help in determining Mg recovery rates in ductile iron. I am using a FeSiMg with 5% Mg. I have an old spreadsheet that shows Mg from the treatment process at 78%. I am not sure how they got to this number. Any help is greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/FoundryLabSup [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is there a way to tell which color an alloy of platinum will have? I want to choose what I alloy it with for a nice color. No other properties are important for this application. Metals I have available for alloying: Silver Copper Gold Tungsten Molybdenum Aluminum Tin Magnesium I am particularly interested in colors resulting from alloying with silver and copper. Any help would be appreciated, thank you! Also sorry for the formating, I'm on mobile. submitted by /u/AmateurAtEverything1 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Need help quantifying the Si % on an Al Alloy

Hello, I need help with a school project. As part of a project, my professor has asked me to quantify the Si% of an aluminum alloy. The microstructure is below. I'm pretty confident it is Al-204.0-T4, based on some hardness testing (45HRB) and other testing. It is a cast alloy from a table base. If any of you have done this in the past, how have you done it? https://preview.redd.it/7oi9yoe4t4wc1.png?width=1064&format=png&auto=webp&s=a0b01ac9b7adebc76669e1cb853af01684baa50d https://preview.redd.it/20xa1qe4t4wc1.png?width=1064&format=png&auto=webp&s=1da4ed2a7e31282a4 ..read more
