Gubanov wins Ennis Congress

Well done to IM Oleh Gubanov who put in an excellent performance in a strong field to win the Ennis Congress outright on 4.5 from 5, winning both his games on Sunday against IM Attila Turzo and FM Kavan Venkatesan. IM Mihnea Costa, Limericks James Naughton and FM Colm Daly finished in a 3 way tie for second on 4 out of 5. There was success for Ennis too in the U1700, as local player Roy Marshall took clear first place and the Marcel Castricum trophy on 4.5 from 5 with a last round win over Hari Prasad who finished in a 4 way tie for second with other local players Peter Koeller and Eoin Callin ..read more

All 3 Ennis teams had good results in the latest rounds of the Munster League held in Charleville last Sunday. The A team had wins against Limerick A and Tralee A, while the B team started with a loss to Charleville but won their second match against Dungarvan while the C team did the double over Tralee B. Lopez wins his fifteenth Mulcahy

IM Alex Lopez continued his record breaking run of results in the Mulcahy Cup in Cork last weekend as he won the Mulcahy for the fifteenth time. He won his first 5 games before a last round draw allowed him to coast home in first place on 5.5 from 6. He wasn’t unduly troubled in any of his games either apart from his round 3 game against Piotr Leichert where his position looked somewhat ropey at one point. As announced at the prizegiving in the 90 games Alex has played in those 15 tournaments he has won 80, drawn 10 and lost none, which is an impressive stat. A small, but intrepid, group of chess players braved the inclement weather on Thursday to take part in the clubs Christmas blitz. 16 players in total took part in 6 rounds of fast chess with a time control of 5 minutes with 3 second increments per move. Yours truly won the event on a score of 5.5. George Stack finished in second place on 5 points while Tommy Dunne on 4 points took third place on tiebreak from John Cassidy and Jamie Comely who won the best junior prize.
