Quick Update Oct 2020: Guest Post and Small Update

Happy almost-Halloween. Just a quick update on two fronts: I wrote a guest blog post over at chessgoals.com. It covers three elements that I consider foundational for a chess study plan: analyzing your games, analyzing master games, and solving tactics. It goes into detail on each, and how I approach them. Check it out here: https://chessgoals.com/foundational-chess-training/ My intended training plan during the school year has completely fallen apart, and I’ve made virtually no progress the last month. School just took too much time. With exams coming up, I doubt I will get back on track, so ..read more

Knowledge vs Skill

In law school, you learn the law (duh). That means learning an incredible amount of information: doctrine, rules, cases, precedents, historical trends and the list goes on. It goes without saying that doing well requires retaining all this knowledge … but it also requires more. If you only know the law, you are in for a rude surprise when you come to the exam. Did you know that one of the best indicators of law school success is how many practice exams you write? It’s true. The more you practice, the better you get at applying the law, and your marks reflect this. In other words, writing exams ..read more

Fall/Winter 2020: Chess, Life and School Update

Having recently completed a fairly rigourous and generally enjoyable summer training plan, I figured I’d do the exact same thing during the fall and winter. It won’t be as intense, as school needs to take priority, but it should be fun. Of course, I have more than just chess vying for my time. I am entering a crucial year for my schooling, and I have other interests I’m trying to develop as well. Treat this post as a general update on what to expect for the next eight months. The Plan In the summer, I took three openings I had never/rarely played and put them to the test, playing lots of blitz ..read more

Summer Training 2020: Final Update

I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that I tweaked my back last week. I had a “vacation” planned, as much as one can have a vacation during a pandemic, so I just ended up sitting around for four days, barely moving. The good news is that sitting around is exactly what you need to play some chess! I have hit 250 blitz games played for August, which was my goal total for my summer training program, and tallied the results. This post will a) list the raw stats, b) compare the stats with my first month of training, and c) detail my subjective musings across this entire training sequence ..read more

Summer Training 2020 Update #5: Start of Third Month

I gave a quick update after my first week of summer training back in June, so I thought I might as well complete the process and offer an update now, one week into my final month. A summary of my training plan is here. In short, I picked some openings I had no/minimal experience, played a whole bunch of blitz games, then stopped playing games so I could study some theory, and now, in the final month, I’m playin a whole bunch of games and seeing how much the theory propels my game, if at all. I’ve played less games compared to this time in June (86 vs 105), but I’m also spending less time on ch ..read more

Summer Training 2020 Update #4: Studying Theory
SmithyQ | A Chess Improvement Blog

This will be a short entry. July did not go exactly as I had envisioned when I laid out my summer 2020 plan. Last month, I played a whole bunch of games without theory; this month, I was supposed to study the theory of my most common lines. I guess I did that, but it was … awful. Two things stand out. First, after spending most of 2020 in pandemic-induced hibernation, I have begun going out and being active again. This is great and wonderful, but more time spent running and doing push-ups means less time for chess. Second, and more relevantly, I hated it. If I ever do a related challenge, I wi ..read more

Summer Training 2020 Update #3: Speed Reviewing Master Games
SmithyQ | A Chess Improvement Blog

I’ve outlined my summer training plan previously, here and here. In short, I’ve playing nothing but new openings for an entire month, but instead of studying theory, I could only study complete master games. However, instead of doing my usual 30+min analysis, I would try to spend 5min or less on each game. It’s one game in-depth versus multiple games at less depth, in other words. I won’t lie, I was skeptical of this. If playing blitz is considered bad for your chess, why would blitzing through master games be any different? After about a week, though, I began really enjoying this process, so ..read more

A Rant on Opening Books
SmithyQ | A Chess Improvement Blog

Am I allowed to complain? Seeing as it’s my blog, I can do whatever I want, so here goes. For eleven days now, I’ve been trying to study some chess opening theory, and in that I’ve largely failed. Maybe that’s my fault, but a near equal amount can be placed on the various authors. In short, the majority of chess opening books, videos and courses, maybe even the vast majority, are not structured well. They promote memory but not understanding. In what follows, I complain for half the post, and then I offer my proposed solution. Here’s the problem in a nutshell. Take the following position: Thi ..read more

Summer Training Update #1: Time Management Problems
SmithyQ | A Chess Improvement Blog

I have successfully completed the first week of my summer training program, which I outlined earlier. In short, I’m trying to learn a new set of openings through sheer experience, just playing lots of games and viewing as many master games as I can. I don’t know a move of theory, and by the gods, it shows. It’s only been a week, but that represents 25% of my first month’s training. Not enough to generate any conclusions, but there’s enough here to set a benchmark. How well the rest of this experiment works will be measured against this initial impression. I Don’t Know What I Am Doing I am tryi ..read more
