West Texas conjures up romantic images of flat-barren lands, tumbleweeds, and cows.  All of that is true and more.  Add hundreds of pump jacks, mobile home communities filled with eager oil workers, and dozens of trucks to that equation, and you will get a pretty good image of modern-day Monahans.  Just 30 miles southwest of Odessa- Midland, situated directly on the north side of I-20, and I mean directly, is Monahans Sandhills State Park.  Literally, it is an island of nature surrounded by industry.  You can’t forget that for even a moment when you’re there.  The ever-present sound of the ..read more

up the rungs Taking on an Appalachian Trail thru-hike is a huge commitment and one that should not be taken for granted. In my opinion, preparation is the key to having a good hike. That being said, I also think that it is important to not overdo that aspect of it. Some of what makes the journey is the fact that there are unknowns in your long walk. I have had some time to reflect on our thru-hike in 2018 and come up with what I think are some important bullet points for your thru. Here are 10 Things to Know about an A.T. One of my favorite things about having VANilla (our travel van) is that it’s so easy to pack up and go somewhere for the weekend. We have almost everything we need prepacked in the van. It’s simply a matter of grabbing some ramen and trail mix and hitting the road. It’s no fuss! This past weekend we took a last-minute trip up to North Texas to visit Copper Breaks State Park. One of the stand-out features of this park is the stars. If you dream of star-gazing, this is the place for you. Copper Breaks State Park is an International Dark Sky Park, and Texas Parks & Wildlife offer ..read more

Out of the 170-million acres of the tallgrass prairie that once stretched across the lands of mid-America, only 4% remains. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in the Kansas Flint Hills is the last stand of the American wild grasslands. And you can take a hike through the tallgrass prairie, imagining what once was and appreciating what some people have worked hard to conserve against all odds. The 11,000 acres of the preserve is open to backcountry hiking. This is the largest section of Tallgrass Prairie left in the world. It is very beautiful, especially at sunrise and sunset. I hadn’t really given Indiana a lot of consideration as a hiking destination, but that is where I was wrong. If you like lovely hardwood forests and free camping, check out the Hoosier National Forest. The Charles C. Deam Wilderness is a groovy place to stop over for an evening or a week to hang out in the wilderness and enjoy the beautiful trees. Hike and boondock in the Hoosier National Forest where there are nearly 40 miles of trails. In south-central Indiana not far from Bloomington, check out the Charles C. Deam Wilderness. I highly recommend boondocking at the Blackwell Hor ..read more
