#PaddlingFriendShelli invited me to join the Y-NOT Floaters out of Roanoke, VA on the Shenandoah River this past Sunday. I jumped at the chance to reconnect with #PFS after a year of not seeing or paddling with her after the 2023 Nelson Downriver Race and also meet some new people on a section of river I have never paddled.
Plus the allure of a coordinated shuttle with experienced paddlers is just too compelling to pass up.
It was a slightly chilly and windy day, but I was fine in my shorty wet suit while everyone else seemed to be in full dry suits.

If you have never entered a kayak race, go ahead and find a local race to enter in 2024. You do not have to be a true racer to have a wonderful experience and meet some great people who are part of the paddling community.

My first time at “Little D” in 2017
Little D 2022. I did not have cameras onboard in 2023 but wish I did because the water was very high that I paddled over trees. Literally, trees that fell into the river and were floating downstream.

Today I got to test the Coleman/Sevylor QuikPak K5 kayak.
I’ve seen a few inflatables on the water and have heard so much about them, I just had to try one out for myself. I think I am really going to like the portability of this kayak as I’ll be able to take it just about anywhere.
For around $100, I think this is a great kayak for a beginner who wants to try the sport before they sink a lot more money into better equipment. These inflatable kayak certainly do have a place in the kayak market. They are great entry points for those just getting started in the sport.
