Crier’s War by Nina Varela: Romance, Revolutionaries, and ALL the Angsty Fluff

I’m honestly so overwhelmed by just how much I enjoyed this book. High fantasy isn’t normally my jam, but from the very beginning of this, I was obsessed. There’s a timeline at the start of the story that in itself was such an entertaining and interesting read for me, and I couldn’t get enough of it. It’s a bit of a science-fiction mixed with fantasy: androids have been invented and are very close to human, with the exception of enhancements and the requirement to consume heartstone. The androids have overthrown the human government and established themselves as a ruling class, leading ..read more

This is something new and totally different than a lot of my other posts, but I’m really excited to share it with you! Especially given my spotty posting schedule. (Expect reviews for Crier’s War by Nina Varela, Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett, The Library of Lost Things by Laura Taylor Namey, Resurrection Girls by Ava Morgyn, and The Light at the Bottom of the World by London Shah . . . soon. I’m a bit a lot behind, heh.) Today though, I’m talking about Kelly Coon’s upcoming fantasy debut, Gravemaidens. If you haven’t heard of Gravemaidens, it’s the start of a fierce fantasy duology ..read more

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a Writer Wednesday post, but I’m really happy to be back with one (and a v entertaining one!) for Maura Milan’s Eclipse the Skies! This is one of my favorite series of all time (amazing character dynamics! so much action! space glory!) and it’s so exciting to be able to interview these characters, who are some of my favorite! If this is your first time reading a character interview from me (and an author!), well, you’re in for a treat, because this one is amazing. I feel like we got a really good balance of character dynamics, worldbuilding, and plot ..read more

Not a Romantic Comedy: Frankly in Love by David Yoon & Why I Cried

There are so many layers to this book, and I’m not sure if I can adequately talk about them in a review. A jumble of thoughts is running through my mind, like a tangle of wires. At its core, Frankly in Love is not a romance. It’s a story about family, set against the quirky background of love. (In the tradition of John Green, Nicola Yoon, and other more contemplative romances.) I definitely had my expectations for this story challenged and changed during reading. It’s a story about living with a family that isn’t perfect, one with high to ridiculous expectations, one with an ingrained hist ..read more

Hey y’all! This is a very impromptu post, but my posting schedule has been out of sorts as I transition into ~college life~. It’s been very busy and all sorts of unique stresses, but overall I’m having a really good time. I have really good friends, a beautiful campus, and classes I’m excited about, which I’m very thankful for. And the dining hall isn’t as bad as I complain about (and I complain a lot). However, I’d still love to catch up with y’all about reading (and am writing this in a free hour I have before my next class). So, some small updates! (And tell me what you’ve been up t ..read more

She’s the Worst by Lauren Spieller: A Day-Long Story of Sisterhood, Friendship, & Family

I sped through this in the span of a few hours on the trip to college and honestly really enjoyed it. I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially because Spieller’s debut leaned a lot more on the romance side, and this leans a lot more on the friendship and sisterhood side, but wow, this was such a pleasant surprise. It takes place over less than 48 hours and is a story of two sisters, April and Jenn, who have grown apart, but are attempting to close the gap between them. There’s a lot of messy feelings and relationships as their views of each other and how they view themselves clash, as ..read more
