This tree is such an amazing giver that is deserves its homage here.  From its intense golden fall colors to its rapid growth, this tree is much more than just a tree to produce maple syrup from.  Here in Northern Kentucky, we are at one of the southernmost lines of sugar maple, yet it thrives on my farm, especially on the north face and in south facing valleys. As I deepen my practice of homesteading, I wanted to share some philosophical and practical tenants of homesteading. My homesteading practice is one that is forged in discipline and an openness of awe and splendor towards nature. Here at the Farm at Treasure Lake, the TreeYo Permaculture headquarters stationed in Northern Kentucky, lots is going on despite it being winter. First, what is not going on this year is maple syrup tapping, which usually happens right around this time. I still have tons from last year, and my tennis elbow has me not wanting to lift 20-pound buckets on and off all day. Maybe I will do a later run in February just because I love it so much! It’s that time again here on the southern range of the sugar maple trees. We start early for sure because the rollercoaster of temperatures is quite extreme here in the Ohio River valley.
