By Jesse De Boer For those familiar with the word agroforestry, the name Ernst Gotsch will likely be familiar. Back in 1984 this man bought 1,200 acres of completely deforested land that once hosted a fabulous rainforest. The area had been subsequently re-classified as "Dry Lands" but Götsch was on a mission to establish new ways to work with, rather than against nature. He began much as the Barefoot team have done up in Turkana – and elsewhere, by replanting the naked soils according to a system of natural succession - naming his methodology as "syntropic" agriculture, because he sees it as ..read more

By Michael Barton | Permaculture Consultant Man has that question haunted me since leaving high school. But coming to the end of a contract and the hand-over of a project I’ve found that question once again has crept back into my mindscape. However, this time around I no longer have the ‘deer in headlights’ look to reply with but more of the overly confident exterior appearance, with the ‘fake it till you make it’ mentality to drive it home. With little over a year, of part time work with Barefoot Soulutions, I can clearly notice my personal growth. The Turkana Project has proven, time and ag ..read more

By Organix Ltd How can we conserve water? Organix has two products, Absorber & Okoamaji. Both products can reduce watering frequency, help with aeration, reduce leaching, and uniform germination of seed planted crops. Watering frequency is reduced depending on the type of soil and weather conditions. Sandy soils require more water then loamy or clay soils. During hot weather, plants loose a lot of water through their leaves due to transpiration. On average Absorber & Okoamaji can reduce watering frequency by 50%. Suppose you are in a hot area like Turkana and need to water your trees ..read more
