Yet another year has flown by. I don't know if it's because of the craziness in the world or just me getting older, but it truly feels like the year went by in a blur. I read much slower this year than in previous years, however I experiences some really good stories in 2021. Here are my favorites in the order that I read them and if I have a full review I will link them.  I'm wishing everyone love, peace, and good stories to take you through 2022! Happy New Year and Happy Reading! Monica Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse: rich worldbuilding and fantastic characters. Re ..read more

Will by Will Smith: Review

Will by Will Smith I was able to binge listen to the Will Smith memoir and I enjoyed every minute! I pre-ordered the physical book but I also got access to the audio book from Penguin Random House Audio and I am so glad! If you can, I HIGHLY recommend listening to this one. Will narrating it himself makes it wonderful but the addition of music and other audio clips makes this one of the most entertaining audio books that I have experienced. Will reading his own story plays directly into his strengths as a storyteller and entertainer that added emotion and impact to his anecdotes. Is ..read more

The Long Way Home (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #10) by Louise Penny: Review

The Long Way Home So...this was not a great one in the series. It focused on Clara, who until this installment, I didn't realize is probably my least favorite character next to her husband Peter; who although missing still manages to cast an annoying presence across the storyline. The only thing that saved this from being a two star rating is Penny's engaging writing that helped move me through a plot that I wasn't very interested in and the last 30 pages or so actually gave me what I often want in this series. I absolutely love the atmospheric storytelling in this series so I'm n ..read more

Bibliophile: Diverse Spines by Jamise Harper buy link Happy pub day to the inspirational Jamise Harper! I was so excited to get my pre-order in the mail over the weekend and I'm filled with joy for Jamise's milestone of having her first published book. My favorite part of this book are the sections of 'Bookish People Recommend' that features influencers that I follow and respect for their championing of reading inclusively. If this wasn't already on your radar please go check it out-it'd make a great gift for yourself or a bookish friend.  ..read more

Read Until You Understand: The Profound Wisdom of Black Life and Literature by Farah Jasmine Griffin

Happy Monday y'all! The start of a new month always feels like a reading reset. It's the start of non-fiction November and Read Until You Understand by Farah Jasmine Griffin is the one non-fiction book that I am committed to reading this month. I tend to work through non-fiction at a slower pace and at only 218 pages I know that I can get this one read and have a fighting chance of easily reading more books as well this month. I intend to share some of the other non-fiction titles that I have on my shelves this month so if you're looking for more to add to your TBR keep an eye out over the ..read more

When the Stars Go Dark by Paula McLain: Review

When the Stars Go Dark by Paula McLain buy link I have to admit that this audio book started out rough for me, not because it isn't a well written and performed audio book, it's because I wasn't prepared for the intense trauma that is presented right off the bat. I don't often read things that need trigger warnings, but this one definitely does. Death of a small child, fresh and unrelieved grief, and child sexual abuse are the biggest ones that actually shook me for a bit. I think that McLain presented these things well but her writing is so clear and profound that I did have a str ..read more

Revelator by Daryl Gregory: Review

Revelator by Daryl Gregory buy link Revelator gives full on creepy gothic story vibes without bending into scary/horror territory which I appreciated. The story itself gave me the same feeling I got watching some old school X-Files episodes but set in 1930's Smoky Mountains. Stella is a moonshine running woman with a Black man as her main partner, owner of a still cooking a recipe developed by 'Uncle Dan' to add color and credibility to the quality of her product, and a mission to stay as far away from her disturbing past as possible. We find out at the very beginning of the story that Ste ..read more

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty: Review

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty buy link I absolutely enjoyed every bit of this story! It's been a while since an audio book was so good that I found extra things to do so that I could keep listening. The narrator for this one is excellent. If you enjoy audio books I would highly recommend consuming this one because Caroline Lee did a bang up job that made this story that much more enjoyable. The humor in this is subtle and awesome and I even found myself tearing up a bit in a couple of places which was so surprising. Excellent story with really good characters, a plot that un ..read more

A Slow Fire Burning by Paula Hawkins: Review

A Slow Fire Burning buy link A Slow Fire Burning started off a little slow and I was wondering how these characters were actually connected but now that it's becoming clear I'm here for all of it. Hawkins has created some pretty unlikable characters in this one, but once their backstories are revealed I can't help but think that I would probably be inclined to be a crappy person after going through what they go through as well. It doesn't excuse some of what they do but it sure explains it. The twists and reveals at the end of this one made up for the slow start for sure. ***I receive ..read more
