This morning, on the very last morning of Ramadan, I stayed up after Fajr prayer watching the sunrise. I sat in silence, making duaa with the morning when suddenly, I started crying. I was hit with an intense wave of sadness and felt all of the emotions from the last few days finally overcome me. I hadn’t cried yet, but this morning, it all felt like too much.  The last week has been devastating for Muslims around the world. These last few days and nights of Ramadan, usually a time of intense spirituality, have been overshadowed with violence in Palestine. I, like so many around the wor ..read more

What I Learned About Self Love from My Favorite Black Creatives By Sumayya Tobah @thisissumayya I always circle back to the topic of self-love around the month of February. Maybe it’s a backlash to all the romantic talk around Valentine’s Day. Maybe it’s because the New Year was a while back, all resolutions now basically forgotten. But every time February rolls around, I ask myself, “What can I do to progress my personal journey of self-love and self-acceptance?”  This year, I decided to ask others the same question: What does self-love mean to you?  “My definition of self-love is p ..read more

REMEMBERING TO TAKE TIME FOR OURSELVES Whether you’re a mom, you work, you’re a student, a mom working from home, women tend to forget the importance of putting themselves first. Oftentimes we’re caught in the repetitive cycle of “what do I need to do next?” when we should be wondering when we should take a break. Let’s take a moment to remember why it’s important to step back and take care of ourselves. Why Is It Important? There’s no one reason to explain the importance of taking a moment to yourself. Do you ever feel stressed out and you don’t know why? Do you ever feel exhausted, even aft ..read more

Written by Khusboo Jamal. “I’ve read the Qur’an and there is no such thing as the evil eye or jinn,” He argued.  “Yea, and no where in the Qur’an does Allah say we need to wear hijab,” she added on. “Those are very strong statements to claim guys,” Sara replied, “You need to be mindful of what you say about the Qur’an especially if you are not 100% backed on your claims with authentic scholarly research. What if later you realize otherwise and you’ve already unintentionally spread falsehood by saying this to others? If there’s no such thing, then why would we have the blessing of Surah Al ..read more

As I sat lazing away on my couch scrolling through my Instagram feed, I couldn’t help but feel inadequate. With the gyms closed and social distancing in effect, I became unproductive, just snacking time away and it had been weeks since I last glammed up. Just then, my sister exclaimed as she watched the actresses on TV, “How are they so perfect! Their hair, skin, body and just absolutely everything?”  “Exactly my thoughts,” I nodded in agreement. I can’t even eat clean without binging on ice cream for three days. So much for being in shape and looking put-together ..read more

Written by Khushboo Jamal Working offsite always added to my anxiety. It would mean that I’d have to scramble to find a place to make wudu and pray salah in seclusion when the time came but I left it up to Allah to help me. I always made du’a for Allah swt to bless me with a job where I would not have to sacrifice my deen so I had faith Allah would have my back wherever I’d go. The next day, I walked into the Department of Buildings and rushed to the meeting room where I’d be presenting to the CIO. As I took my seat at the table, my eyes would not believe what I saw in the far-left corner of t ..read more

Why I Didn't Take Off My Hijab

Written by Khushboo Jamal All dressed up, my friends and I cheerily chatted up as we waited at the crosswalk on our way to our middle school award ceremony. Just then, a group of guys in their late teens drove by screaming degrading remarks, “Towel heads!” My friends wore hijab while I didn’t at the time, yet they brushed it off. I was eleven years old and that stuck with me till this day. At age 13, my high school girls’ basketball coach said I wouldn’t be able to join the team if I didn’t wear my hijab like a durag. It was a safety issue apparently. I walked away. At age 18, I majored in com ..read more

Written by Khushboo Jamal “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar…” called the muezzin for the Maghrib prayer in Madinah. Practically everything closed at the time of prayer as streets filled with pedestrians making their way to answer the call to prayer in such a peaceful, serene manner. As the prayer ended, I remained seated in the courtyard of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, just taking in all that I could. The sky was a beautiful gradient transitioning the sunset into a night sky. The comfortably cool breeze of December filled the air. In the distance, I saw strangers sharing dates and other snacks. I glanced to ..read more
