In the mid-1960s, Djunga de Biluca founded the now legendary record label Morabeza Records in my hometown of Rotterdam. Legendary, not only because of the important contribution the record label and Djunga Biluca made to the development of modern Cape Verdean music, but especially because of the important role both played in the Cape Verdean islands' struggle for independence. ♫ Audio: 1976 – “Fidjos de Ningem” (from LP Caboverdianos Na Holande) More information about the label and its founder can be found at this link.  Caboverdeamusica: Djunga de Biluca Below you will find the l ..read more

PERSONAL FAVORITE Each person has his favorites, so have I. When it comes to Makossa, mine is already since 1987 the one and only Guy Lobe. Now I have just started this blog, I have to ask your attention for the fact that Guy's first record "Nko wanga" was released 25 years ago. For me a good occasion to tell you how I became hooked up by his music. It was on a saterday afternoon in 1987 that I went to Brussels to visit the record shop Musica Nova. In those days this shop, owned by the Italian "Pierro" was the best place to buy the latest African records. The shop was overc ..read more

In the summer of 1991, I was introduced to the debut album A bas la violence by Jolino Kiezowa. During a visit to the legendary (but by now closed) record shop Musica Nova, an album featuring my highly appreciated singers Carlito Lassa and Nyboma Mwan Dido caught my eye. The owner Pierrot raised his thumb and beckoned me, which meant something like: "Good record, give it here and I'll play it for you. A few moments later, Jolino's slightly hoarse voice echoed through the record shop. His voice was a perfect match with those of Carlito and Nyboma and after listening ..read more

INTRODUCTION They call her the diva, the music queen of Guinea-Bissau. With a bright smile, a calm step and a full voice she has used for almost 20 years to make 2 dreams come true.   In the 1970s, the Gabonese musicians who reached an international audience could be counted on the fingers of one hand. You had Hilarion Nguéma, Mackjoss and that was about it. The international success of Akendengué and others only came in the 1980s. Nevertheless, at the end of the 70s, new names appeared at the local level, such as Martin Rompavet, Pierre Claver Zeng or Aziz'Inanga. A number of promising new bands also appeared on the scene in those years, including Orchestre Massako. They were mainly supported by government agencies. For example, Orchestre Massako was sponsored by th ..read more
