RETURNING TO NORMAL?!?!

For me and many who have turned towards their own sovereign mental and physical health, the word “normal” may have always seemed a little weighted. When our entire way of life is lived at a dangerous remove from the natural systems which sustain us, one has to ask whether or not the normalcy it created was ever really that healthy. As a longtime Burning Man devotee, I tended to live by the edict, “Why be normal?” So if there MUST be a return to normal, let it be a new normal, indeed. Following is a list of several things I’d like to see changed and preserved from this time period. Some of them ..read more

Physical Pandemic Prep

Alright! In betwixt the spiritual and the mental prep, you’ve also been doing some physical prep for your eventual re-entry into polite and not-so-polite society. It’s possible that a lot has changed with you since this all began. In fact, it’s possible that your daily yoga or Peloton routine has kept you alive and sane throughout the entire pandemic. Even before Biden brought a Peloton into the White House along with a rescue dog, those who could afford it brought a lot of their workout gear into the garage, spare room, or wherever they could put it. So presumably, if you’ve been putting in w ..read more

Mental Post-Pandemic Prep

For many reading this piece, mental health may be equivalent to spiritual health, which we touched upon in the last blog post. And at the end of the day, it’s all interconnected. We here at Medicine Box do not believe health should be partitioned out in silos. However, no matter what ultimate truth one’s spiritual practice may provide, there’s still the day-to-day reality to contend with before one can soar to enlightenment. That’s where one’s mental health comes in, and it’s been challenged over the past year more than ever before, for everyone, in their own unique way.   Reports abound ..read more

AFTER THE PANDEMIC: SPIRITUAL PANDEMIC PREP

After the departure of so many dear souls this year, the idea of picking back up and resuming all the things that kept us together is definitely tempting. Already, we’re seeing various states revving up their economic engines as if the pandemic has already been defeated. Yet no matter what tragic fits and starts are made towards the pandemic’s end, it will ultimately end. Dr. Nicholas Christakis borrows a mordant observation often cited by working surgeons attesting to this: “All bleeding stops — eventually.” What that means is that we’ve bled out a lot over the past year, so jumping back into ..read more

The power of belief — we see it everywhere around us, but eventually, we reach its limits. Unfettered belief brings us superstition, which when unquestioned can bring society ill winds. I myself was quite inclined to my fair share of magical thinking as a kid, as most are. My dad in particular was particularly skilled at fantastical storytelling. For instance, if he was reading Peter Pan, he’d bring a magnifying glass into the room and “summon” Tinkerbell. On Christmas, he’d even go to the trouble of dragging skis across our roof to simulate Santa Claus’s sleigh. You grow up with a dad like th ..read more

Spiritual Bypassing

Around the terrain here in Tahoe, you’ll occasionally see the bumper sticker “Too ascended to be offended.” This always makes me shake my head — it reminds me how quickly WE enjoy doubling down on all the things we imagine THOSE people can’t stand. Because by now, everyone should have gotten the celestial download on spiritual bypassing, but they aren’t if they haven’t learned that far from ascending or transcending, spiritual bypassing represents complacency and paralysis. There’s always more to work on, no matter how much you may think you have grown. Seen through the lens of mental health ..read more

Earlier in the year, we were called to send out an email regarding the infamous QAnon Shaman, and the toxic ideology he and his kinfolk brought into the White House. While our country has moved on to other collective pains since then, the embers still glow. Empowered by social media algorithms and the ongoing fears engendered by the pandemic, the mental and social contagions of conspiracy brew not just amongst the mainstream religious communities, but also the health and wellness communities as well — what the MSM calls “pastel QAnon.” Maybe it’s someone in your family. Or maybe it’s you. Firs ..read more

Over the past four years that we’ve opened our Medicine Box, we’ve learned one important thing about plant medicine: people need to complete the circuit. It’s never been about a magic pill that makes a person all better. Community and collaboration fill in the blanks.  Simple, right? Well, seems like a lot of people in the plant medicine world, particularly in the psychedelic space, but certainly in the hemp-CBD and cannabis world as well, haven’t gotten that memo. As Jules Evans recently pointed out on Medium, there’s tens of millions of dollars poured into R&D for brand new psychede ..read more

Within and without this state, Lake Tahoe is seen as a pristine paradise. People from the San Francisco Bay Area and the rest of the world come here to escape from the chaos and uncertainty of their daily lives. The shifting climate realities of this region, however, has informed us locals that these problems have already arrived. During the yearly Operation Sierra Storm conference, a panel on Tahoe’s shifting climate realities speculated temperature increases from 3.6 to 9 degrees in temperature, and no more snow below the 9,500 square foot elevation (to give you an idea of what that means fo ..read more

How to Weed out Urban Despair with Plant Medicine

In an interview last year with Anderson Cooper, the veteran BBC nature filmmaker Sir David Attenborough stated, “In the course of this particular pandemic that we’re going through, I think people are discovering that they need the natural world for their very sanity.” Stands to reason that WE will probably go crazier if it keeps dying out. I can only speculate about how many medicine plants we’ve already lost to a Brazilian cattle rancher’s rapaciousness or poor land management worldwide. No doctor would rip out someone’s bodily organ and throw it in the trash simply because s/he didn’t recogn ..read more
