Every month I intend to write 2 or 3 journals giving you all the news from the Jericho Kitchen but as importantly sharing my food journey.  This was utterly inspired, after a long overdue visit to London last week. If you know me then you know my utter frustration with Oxford and the lack of opportunities here for new businesses – high rents, the difficulties in getting into Oxford and then the price of parking here.  I have been living back here for over 16 years and every year I think it will change, or even that I can start a change to allow new start ups and new ideas not just la ..read more

Allotments, wild meadows, foraging and walking barefoot – keeping pace with nature – all doable in 2021!!!!   Every year I sit down to write something to you all and every year it is so easy but this year it has taken me 4 hours to even start writing! Frustrated and confused by 2020 and where we were going with the jericho kitchen has been a constant, as we have probably all experienced trying to continue with our previous lives in this current situation has been near on impossible! So…. instead of moving into 2021 continuing this pattern – I found a new one, a new vibration and one that ..read more

We need you… Please support us hard working independents!!   I guess we all know it was going to happen… For so many of us independent businesses and the hospitality sector it couldn’t have come at a worse time.? Not just because we were starting to emerge from the the first lockdown – it takes months to gain trust from people to come out again but more so because it is coming up to the time of year when we all pray for a prosperous Christmas for our businesses. So, whilst we all have to shut shop for 4 weeks – please could I ask you all consider doing one thing this year when you start t ..read more

?Bao? To The Bun ? A WhistleStop Global Street Food Extravaganza With The Brilliant John Fernandez At The Jericho Kitchen Cookery School by julianrolfe The clocks went back last night and I was up at 05:30 on a Sunday morning, to be honest I was not sure what time it was, the excitement of attending another cookery school after such a long time was too much! My last attempt failed due to, well that ?C? word as ?Junior? had ?symptoms? and as a result self isolation had to take place, but I had managed to secure a place on a later date and that day had finally arrived. This was my first venture ..read more

What is happening at the Jericho Kitchen?! Is it possible that I love my job more than I ever did? Yes it absolutely is?..   Despite having taken virtually no bookings in over 3 months? Yes despite that! Despite that people are obviously nervous about coming out again and being with other people? Yes despite even that! What this period has done is make me realise that every situation that life throws at you can be overcome. We are incredibly lucky that lockdown came a week before we moved into our new venue in Nuneham Courtney because if I am honest we weren?t even ready to move in! Time ..read more

Hello everyone & Happy Easter!   We hope that you are continuing to keep well and are settling in to what is our normal for the time being?? I don’t know about you but I haven’t had such an array of seeds growing at the speed of light right now for years.? I don’t know if it is the weather or the fact that I have to time to concentrate my brain on something other than the cookery school – I do tend to get obsessed with a project!! This week I planted basil, more tomatoes, peas, borlotti beans, broad beans, spinach and kale.? I just can’t wait to plant them all out at the allotment in ..read more

The Good Life!

The Good Life! Anyone that know me knows that the BBC series, The Good Life (for those of you who are too young ? ask your parents!) has been a huge part of my life since I was a child. More so as an adult, probably because Richard Briers always reminded me of my dad! Not that my parents ever had an allotment ? I think in the 70?s it was the preserve of the over 60?s generally. In this programme Tom & Barbara Good opted out of the rat race and turned they suburban garden into an allotment.?? I loved the simplicity even then, their life seemed idyllic ? they worked hard, ate well and always ..read more

Time to reflect….

July and August are the months of ?down time? in the average year of the cookery school.?? Time to get organised, time to think about Christmas ? although this year I had to wait until I literally stopped melting before I could even utter the word! As I sit writing this in the exact same spot (Branca restaurant in Jericho!) where the tiny acorn of an idea was brought to life nearly 4 years ago now I have started to reflect on the journey so far. As with all businesses each year is a learning curve. Strangely the early years had less extreme curves ? probably because it took a year to get going ..read more

Summer, Supper Clubs & Borough Market! So with June fast approaching we are all now ready for sun and strawberries and hopefully no more Beasts from the East!! Since giving up my other full time job a couple of weeks ago to concentrate on making the ever growing and successful business that is my cookery school even more so, we are extremely happy with the results. We are now working solely with Yarnton Manor here in Oxford?? http://www.yarntonmanor.com/ to hold all their corporate and other cookery events there in their stunning grounds.
