Let's talk Coquito! If you aren't familiar with it, Coquito is a popular Puerto Rican alcoholic drink. This coconut drink is a staple of the holiday season in Puerto Rico and has gained popularity worldwide. You will often hear it referred to as Puerto Rican egg nog. While the consistency is similar, they are very different drinks. Coconut is the prominent flavor in Coquito. The name itself even means "little coconut" in Spanish. Coquito is a beverage mainly made at home. You will find secret family recipes written on tattered old recipe cards handed down by relatives. The common ingredients a ..read more

Cold and flu season is upon us! and after 2 years indoors thanks to COVID our immunity seems to be way sown. So. it’s time to boost the immunity a bit while we enjoy a sip. This is a drink I created for Tanteo Tequila awhile back. It has carrot, ginger and jalapeño and in a margarita style cocktail. That is both spicy and refreshing. The Tanteo is a pretty bold spice, you can tame it a bit by going 50/50 with Blanco tequila. I Don’t Carrot All 1.5 oz Tanteo Jalapeño Tequila 1 oz Fresh Carrot Juice (I buy mine at whole foods or trader joes) 1 oz Barrows Intense Ginger liqueur .75 oz Fre ..read more

If you know me, then you know I was all about local before buying local was cool. Being proud of where you come from and the things that make it special is innate in this farm kid. Which is why I was so excited to hear last week that Whiskey Del Bac is being recognized on Wine Enthusiast’s list of “The 100 Best Spirits of 2021” for their Classic American Single Malt. One of only fifteen Single Malts, one of just three American Single Malts, and one of two spirits from Arizona. I am so excited to see the American single malt category gaining recognition. Whiskey Del Bac owner Stephen Paul has b ..read more

I have long been a fan of the Bijou cocktail. The herbal notes of the gin enhanced by the rich alpine flavors of the green chartreuse that screams “look at me!!” both in flavor profile and color when you put it in a drink. With the vermouth and bitters rounding it out and providing the necessary foil to all those herbs. Rabbit Hole Distilling sent me a bottle of their barrel aged Bespoke Gin to try. Marrying their loves together they rest London dry gin in their Kentucky rye barrels. The result is a golden liquid with a hint of spice. It’s a gin that rides that line between whiskey and gin. It ..read more

Being Thankful in a Strange Year
The Cocktail Maven

2020 is a year none of us will forget. Nearly everything we thought about the world going into the year has been changed in some way. So at Thanksgiving this year being thankful took on a more simple feel. Having a job that pays my bills and a healthy family feels like a bounty in this year of extreme loss. My Thanksgiving cocktail represents the same simplicity and perhaps somber notes. I didn’t feel like the standard bubbly cranberry cocktail. Something older, more grounded and more warm and comforting felt right. This gin is one of my special bottles. Not because of rarity or price but rat ..read more

We’ve all been drinking more cocktails it seems lately passing the time at home in quarantine. I wanted something today that didn’t weigh me down as Arizona begins to warm up during the day. Vermouth is an unsung hero of so many cocktails. Prior to Prohibition it held a staring role in drinks but after prohibition it slipped into more of a supporting role. It got a bit of a bad wrap in the 1970’s with the terrible stuff people cooked with and that single bottle that languished in grandma’s cupboard for years. Quality Vermouth is as special and wonderful as any spirit. It has ask much history a ..read more

Dalgona Goes to Russia

I had to jump all in on Dalgona coffee and add my cocktail twist to this Quarantrend. Is quarantrend even a thing? All of us stuck at home across the world it seems like trends are developing at a faster pace from ever before, so I’m gonna call it a thing. So hashtag #quarantrend it is. While Dalgona style coffee isn’t exactly new, it exploded out of South Korea in March and took social media by storm. I mean, we are all home anyway, why not add sugar to grandpa’s instant coffee and whip the living daylights out of it? Dalgona Coffee is nothing short of whipped magic. It’s fairly simple actua ..read more

Sometimes things happen that we don’t expect and it changes our perspective on everything. COVID-19 is one of those things. Suddenly all the things we take for granted, like having access to food and basic sanitary supplies any time we want, are put into question. We are asked to think about our preparedness for disasters of any kind. We are forced to consider about how delicate the balance actually is of life as we know it. How small things can have a large ripple effect. We are reminded that our seemingly robust American economy is still really just a lot of great people living their own ki ..read more

Carbonated Cocktails at Home

I taught a cocktail class last weekend, the proceeds of which are benefiting Phoenix Center for the Arts which truly does incredible things in the Phoenix community for the underserved. I usually do some kind of Prosecco welcome cocktail as people are mingling and getting seated. This time I decided on a carbonated welcome cocktail that’s pre-bottled. Mostly because it’s easy for me. It allows me to focus on the other four courses which were fairly complex. It also allows me to make it ahead and ease the burden on the day of the event. Bottled cocktails have been popular for awhile, and car ..read more
