A One Mann’s Movies review of “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” (2024). I went into “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” with low expectations and they were pretty universally met. It bends over backwards to tick the ‘Ghostbusters’ boxes. So much so that it sticks its head up its own spectral deformity. Bob the Movie Man Rating: Plot Summary: When Ray Stanz (Dan Ackroyd) receives a strange object from wide-boy Nadeem Razmaadi (Kumail Nanjiani) a terrifying ancient force is unleashed. It takes the talents of the original Ghostbusters and the new generation to combat the threat to New York and the world ..read more

Drive Away Dolls (15): Ethan Coen Dilutes His Brand With Unfunny Lesbian Caper.

A One Mann’s Movies review of “Drive Away Dolls” (2024). The Coen brothers hold a solid standing of respect with me. There films, although variable, have never been less than interesting. The trailor for this solo outing, directed by Ethan Coen and co-written by Coen and his wife Tricia Cooke, looked quirky and fun. And it featured an all star cast. I like a raunchy comedy like the best of them but, as “Movie 43” proved, an all-star cast is no promise of cinema-heaven. Bob the Movie Man Rating: Plot Summary: Lesbian friends Jamie (Margaret Qualley) and Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) are in n ..read more

A One Mann’s Movies review of “Cabrini” (2024). When my two Flickering Dreams colleagues, Andy Godfrey and Scott Forbes, BOTH gave “Cabrini” an unusual 10/10 score, I made it my mission to find a showing. Not easy, as it seems to be on very limited release. But I found it on show in “Everyman” and was so glad I did. Extraordinary stuff. Bob the Movie Man Rating: Plot Summary: In a remarkable true story, it’s 1889 and the highly driven nun Mother Cabrini implores the Pope to let her go on a mission – the first ever by a female – to do good in China. The Pope refuses, but allows her to take he ..read more

A One Mann’s Movies review of “Ricky Stanicky” (2024). It’s just amazing how new releases will follow trends. 2022 was the year of the Multiverse. Last year was the year of AI. This year, we seem to have a glut of films about Imaginary Friends! Last week I reviewed “Imaginary“: a horror film about an imaginary friend. In mid-May we are due to get “IF” – probably the big-hitter for the year, starring Ryan Reynolds. But before that, we have this film – “Ricky Stanicky” – currently streaming on Prime Video. It’s a Peter Farrelly comedy, which is as near to a game of movie Russian Roulette as yo ..read more

A One Mann’s Movies review of “Bob Marley: One Love” (2024). I must be about the last person to get to see “Bob Marley: One Love” at the cinema. Holidays and other movie new releases have got in the way. That being said, it has been 5 weeks in the UK charts (and is still at number 3 in the charts having made over £15 million)… so maybe it has a couple more weeks anyway. Bob the Movie Man Rating: Plot Summary: It’s the 1970’s and a time of near civil war in Jamaica as rival gangs align with different political parties desperate for power. The already famous Bob Marley plans a concert for peac ..read more

A One Mann’s Movies review of “Imaginary” (2024). “Imaginary”: yet another low-thrills horror film; with more than a few passing similarities to “Poltergeist” and “Insidious: The Red Door” (except “The Colour of the door is RRRRR—OYAL BLUE!”) Bob the Movie Man Rating: Plot Summary: Jessica (DeWanda Wise) moves back into her old childhood home with her new husband Max (Tom Payne) and his daughters Taylor (Taegen Burns) and Alice (Pyper Braun). But when Alice finds a teddy bear in the cellar she creates an imaginary friend called Chauncey and strange things start to happen. Certification: UK ..read more

It’s Oscar Predictions time again! The 96th Academy Awards take place tonight, Sunday March 10th 2024. I’m sticking my neck out once again to predict who will win on the night. Will there be any major surprises this year? In most of the major awards, it’s actually difficult to see where those surprises will come from… but they will be BIG if they happen! Once again, as for the BAFTAs, I will be head-to-head in my predictions with my Flickering Dreams colleague Scott Forbes (of the Forbes Film and TV Review on Facebook). Scott is unerringly accurate with his predictions for the Oscars, but we ..read more
