Have your parents ever told you to stand up straight? It’s actually really solid advice. There is a growing amount of younger (and older) people who have terrible posture. I’m actually going to blame technology for it. Look around you. Everyone has a phone attached to their person and everyone of those people are looking down to view it. Then you have the gaming community, the growing number of people who are watching tv hunched over instead of playing outside, doing chores or pretty much anything! People are getting lazier (is that a word?!). Terrible posture will lead to pain. Not only will ..read more

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland that is in your neck. The thyroid gland takes iodine, found in many foods, and converts it into thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). T3 and T4 regulate your metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature. Low body temperature is an indication of a thyroid problem! The thyroid gland is under is controlled of the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is a small gland in your brain that produces hormones. When T3 and T4 drop too low, the pituitary gland secretes Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). When should you worry about arm pain? Do you have shoulder pain, shoulder blade pain, elbow pain, hand pain? Any numbness? How do you qualify the pain? Sharp, burning, achy? All these things matter when determining where the pain is coming from. Let’s talk about radiating pain down one arm. The arm and scapula is supplied by the brachial plexus. The brachial plexus is a large bundle of nerves that run down the arm and scapula and innervates the muscles. Issues with pain, muscle weakness and numbness can be largely contributed to the brachial plexus. This can be due to posture, accidents and i ..read more

Potty training can be a difficult task for parents, especially if the child doesn’t feel ready. Once day time dryness has been achieved the harder task is to stay dry through the night. Around 20% of children have some problems with bed wetting at age 5 and up to 10% still do at age 7. By the late teens, the estimated rate of bed wetting is between 1% and 3% of children. Boys are more likely to have problems at night versus girls. This can be very embarrassing for the child or teen. Not wanting to spend the night with friends or have anyone over. Wearing “diapers” to bed can also cause depres ..read more

Have you ever heard of cold laser? How about red light therapy? Cold laser therapy is low-intensity laser therapy that stimulates healing while using low levels of light. It is called “cold” laser due to the fact that it does not heat tissues, so you will not feel the laser. (Unless used on top of a tattoo or black hair.) How does it work? Cold lasers are handheld devices that are about the size of a flashlight. The laser is placed directly over the injured area from 30 seconds to several minutes. The time depends on the size of the area being treated and the dose provided by the cold laser u ..read more

Food dyes are everywhere. If you are a label reader you will start noticing how many products have extra added color in them. Simple things like cough syrup, medicines, candy, chips, a ton of packaged food, icings, baked goods, sodas and even salad dressing. In the early 1900s, food manufacturers started to add artificial coloring to foods for extra appeal. There is a lot of thought about the safety of food dyes. The market offers products “with no added dyes”. So it comes to mention that maybe there could be health concerns, especially in children and pregnant women. Food dyes Artificial dye ..read more

Going into fall we see the signs for “flu shots available” pop up everywhere. There are better ways to protect yourself from getting sick during the colder months of the year (and all the other months). The major problem we have going into the holiday season is people tend to stay inside. For good reason of course, it’s much warmer inside. One of the problems is that we decrease the amount of Vitamin D we get from the sun. Vitamin D plays an important role in keeping our immune system boosted. Another big issue we have is an increase of sugar during Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New ..read more

If you watch any type of commercials, you will notice one going around about “custom orthotics”. They are bought at the big box companies and they have a foot scanner, to match you with your “custom” fit. I absolutely love the idea! The problem I have is, they are NOT custom. How they can use the word custom and have only a handful of different products to choose from drives me bonkers! Go to your closet, pull out any pair of shoes and check the foot support. You will be hard pressed to find a shoe with actual arch support. Most shoes are completely flat. (Not to mention you have 3 arches in ..read more
