When the weather starts to cool, but I am always reminded of the old Alpine Village Inn and the Rathskeller in Las Vegas, (Closed in 1997).  This was my favorite place to get a hot bowl of chicken soup, cold beer in a goblet and seasoned cottage cheese to go with a small loaf of bread. The long gone Alpine Village Inn was located at 3003 Paradise Road, across the street from the Las Vegas Hilton. This famous place began serving German food in a downtown location in 1950, then moved four times before settling into its final location on Paradise, in 1970. In-N-Out urge, I’m talking about the burger urge here. 1972 was the first time that I visited an In-N-Out Burger and it was with my Dad. I was six. It was a small store with a drive-thru and a walk-up window.  It was located in West Covina, California not too far from where I grew up and I believe it was store number 2. It seemed to be an old In-N-Out store with its faded red and yellow neon sign even back then. I don’t remember everything about that visit, but I know that In-N-Out has been my favorite burger since that day. By 1974, a brand new In-N-Out was being built within walkin ..read more

Yassou Greek Grill Article originally published on March 26, 2012, the place gets busy during lunch and there are always patrons up until closing time, It is a real food find on the west end of town. Yassou Greek Grill Café is my favorite little Greek restaurant in Las Vegas.  This unassuming restaurant serves up some of the most delicious Greek food in town.  My favorite is their Chicken Souvlaki platter.  It is served with two skewers of savory, tender chicken and comes with a small salad, buttery, lemon rice, warm, fresh pita bread and cool and creamy Tzatziki sauce. Being a resident of Las Vegas for most of my life, my first introduction to anything that resembled Middle Eastern Food was those early Vegas commercials in the late 70’s advertising pita sandwiches from a place called “Gyro Time”, as in gyroscope. They even had a little jingle in the commercial something like “What time is it? Gyro Time!” again with the poor pronunciation right in the ad. Gryo Time still exists on Charleston and the food still is not very good. I have tried most gyros (pronounced “Yee-roh”) joints in town. I have been to both Paymon’s Mediterranean Cafe on Maryland Parkway, a ..read more
