Irvington Brew Fest
Indiana Beer
by GregKitz

There’s nothing quite like sitting with good friends over a beer, or making new ones with a beer in your hand! That’s a purpose of the Irvington BrewFest on Sept. 28. This festival held at Our Lady of Lourdes church (5333 E Washington St. Indianapolis) is a gathering spot for friends new and old. Irvington is not only a historical part of Indianapolis and a neighborhood with rich culture, but an area that never lost its charm and is rising again as one of “the” places in Indy! Amy Petrone understood that when she put together the first event back in 2012. She certainly wanted Black Acre ..read more

Windmill Brewing, Dyer! Smooth beer.
Indiana Beer

Windmill Brewing opened in July of 2015 and is in an unlikely spot across from a hospital. In fact, I passed up the street it is on because the Emergency Room sign points that way so I assumed that street was part of the hospital. It was worth the slight confusion to find a session pale called Snuggle Sesh available and to get a taste of NWI (for North West Indiana) Lite with corn and oats. Their Alligator Blood Russian Imperial Stout sounded delicious with Mexican hot chocolate spices, yum, but alas at 14% and I was there on an afternoon needing to drive on I passed for that tip and ..read more

When I met Sam Yacko again at a beer fest this year I told him I’d try to stop by Fenwick Farms Brewing in Rensselaer, Indiana . Sam was there to greet me in July, happy to share several samples of Fenwick Farms beer. Fly Free is a wheat ale with a distinct wheat profile. Will You Be My Neighbor is a fruit ale with blueberries and uses Indiana grown Willamette hops. Iriquois River is named after the river running through the breweries’ hometown of Rensselaer, Indiana, making it popular with locals as a light cream ale. Bravo Four uses local Cascade and Chinook hops with Comet hops adde ..read more

Guggman Haus, new yet historic spot for beer
Indiana Beer

The name of Guggman Haus comes from Guggenberger and Gorman, two twin sisters and their husbands revising history. Gugg(enberger; Gor)man gives us the brewery name. Haus gives us the cool little 1916 house that currently holds the brewery next to the site of the historic Boyle Racing headquarters, home of famous Indy 500 winner Wilbur Shaw. The Boyle Racing building is being reconstructed for the future brewery, a racing memorabilia spot, and event space. You can find all of this at 1701 Gent Avenue, a few minutes west of I.U. Methodist hospital and a few minutes east of the Stadi ..read more

Congratulations to Flix Brewhouse Carmel (6 wins) and Backstep Brewing Crawfordsville (5 wins) for grabbing the largest number of medals for beer at this years Brewers Cup. In meads and ciders the props go to McClure’s of Peru, IN, for ciders and to Hive and Barrel Meadery in Louisville for the meads in terms of numbers of medals.
