Kid Castle first introduced online teaching in 2019 as part of the new curriculum. In the midst of the current virus situation, adaptability is key as we are living in fast-changing situations. The existing online teaching was therefore expanded upon in order to cater to students who were no longer able to physically attend school. I had never done online teaching before so I was naturally quite nervous and not sure what to expect. So here goes my rundown of what online teaching involves. Application SavvyIt is inevitable that you will be told by your company to download the relevant ap ..read more

The festive season in China, unlike what I am used to, is a little different. In December instead of Christmas Eve dinners and Christmas lunches, it’s business as usual and that’s basically how I spent it. However, in January (or February depending on the lunar calendar) it’s a different story. January is when the festive season really begins, this is called Chinese New Year where we get two weeks off of work. Much like back home, Chinese people usually take this time to visit their home provinces in China or travel with their loved ones. And much alike, foreigners also take this time to t ..read more

Having extended my transit in Kuala Lumpur for a day, I was excited to get a taste of this multi-cultural city. After getting through immigration I headed straight to the KLIA Express, the affordable public transport from the airport straight to the city centre in less than 30 minutes. Luckily for me, the metro was offering a special deal where once you purchase your return ticket for the KLIA Express, you get two days unlimited free trips on the metro. Off to a very good start! I did not buy a sim card but I had previously downloaded offline maps and used that to navigate which stop to get ..read more

Friendship in a Suitcase

From an external view, my relocation to China seemed sudden and ill-prepared. As if I woke up one day and thought “That’s it, I’m done with South Africa. If you need me I will be in China.” Meanwhile, in reality, I was trying to acquire the necessary qualifications (which consisted of a TEFL certificate in addition to my Bachelor’s Degree) while simultaneously taking interviews with different companies. I then compared the different offers I received against the criteria I created. These criteria included the following: salary; housing/housing allowance; medical insurance; holidays/leave a ..read more

Classroom Management

Back to my first ever lesson I remember the first time I walked into a classroom. The student’s eyes felt piercing, I was simultaneously sweaty and yet experiencing the driest mouth. I had prepared a lesson well ahead of time and was as ready as I was ever going to be. And yet I found myself almost shaking as the clock mocked me that it was time for the lesson to begin. Fake it until you make it Despite the preparation, I also lacked confidence as this was not something I had done before (besides some tutoring during university). I found myself feeling more and more comfortable with t ..read more

Tiger Leaping Gorge(ous)

I furiously translated the same sentence to the third person, hoping in vain my request would miraculously be answered. All I wanted was to hike Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hu Tiao Xia) but with every person I queried, it seemed to be less and less possible. Despite the confused expressions, I didn’t give up! Finally, I managed to buy bus tickets at a local hostel within the ancient town of Lijiang, which allowed me to get dropped off at the beginning of the gorge and be able to collect my big bag the next day at a drop off point. It was an early start around 7 am which felt infinitely earlier ..read more

What is Apex? Can you honestly think of anything more exciting than going to school and playing with bubbles? My Apex class certainly cannot and neither can I! So, you may be wondering, what is Apex? This is a  class where we teach the standard curriculum and an additional topic. The topic is Science related and the complexity of the lessons sync with the level of curriculum that they are learning.
