A Little Romance (1979)
Journeys in Classic Film - Kristen Lopez
by Kristen Lopez

There’s one simple lesson I’ve learned in my classic film viewing: that I’ll usually always love a film directed by George Roy Hill. Though I tend to love the movies Hill isn’t best known for. I’ve talked on the podcast about my love for 1962’s Period of Adjustment before and assumed that I’d probably really enjoy his 1979 feature A Little Romance. But I didn’t expect to fall deep in love with it. Maybe it was seeing it at this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival with leading lady Diane Lane talking about her career, but I was so enthralled, so moved by this movie that by the end I was sobbing te ..read more

The Boy Friend (1971)
Journeys in Classic Film - Kristen Lopez

I’ve seen my fair share of Ken Russell-directed movies (though I believe the only one I’ve reviewed here is Valentino, which you should all go back and read). Russell, as a director, is an acquired taste. For all his bold garishness there’s a deep love for film and literature that struggles to assert itself. In the case of The Boy Friend, Russell gives audiences his tribute to the classic musicals of the 1930s, specifically Gold Diggers of 1933. Though the acting of lead stars Twiggy and Christopher Gable is limited, there’s enough visual artistry and joy found within The Boy Friend to keep th ..read more

TCM Classic Film Studio Tour at Warner Bros. Review
Journeys in Classic Film - Kristen Lopez
by Kristen Lopez

Way back in 2018 I took Warner Bros. Original “Classics Made Here” Tour. It was meant to be a way to entice classic film fans to drop by the Warners lot and hear about the films made pre-1975. If you read my initial review, it was a bit middling in terms of whether it lived up to its name (it was a far cry from the combination basic/VIP studio I took even further back in 2013). But as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s renewed investment in TCM the company announced a new TCM branded studio tour that was, again, lauded as being built for the die-hard classic film lovers (particularly those who w ..read more

TCM Classic Film Festival 2024 Review
Journeys in Classic Film - Kristen Lopez

It’s been a few weeks since this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival came to a close. It’s always bittersweet when the festival ends because this means that I’m left waiting for next year’s event. I equate it to post-Christmas malaise. But with a few weeks removed I’m able to see things differently than if I’d written this review in the immediate aftermath of it. This year’s festival had a lot to prove. If I had written a proper review of the 2023 festival it wouldn’t have been particularly complimentary, though that’s also because there was a lot going on behind the scenes at the network that we ..read more

Them! (1954) Review
Journeys in Classic Film - Kristen Lopez
by Kristen Lopez
1M ago
Considered one of the seminal science fiction films of the 1950s, I was fortunate to see Them! in the best way possible. Not only on a big screen with an introduction by sound experts Craig Barron and Ben Burtt during the TCM Classic Film Festival; with Them’s amazing child actress Sandy Descher included. I also saw it after reading Foster Hirsch’s remarkable book Hollywood and the Movies of the Fifties, an engrossing exploration of the decade that saw Old Hollywood change forever and that lays out how Them! played on fears ranging from communism to feminism. All that from a movie about giant ..read more
