Everybody Is Mean: The Church, Meanness and Our Obligation to Heal

Photo Credit: AdobeStock I don’t know how it started but those “Little Miss” memes are everywhere. And many of them are hilarious. My homegirl sent me one this morning. “Little Miss Followed The ‘Rules’ But Got A Below Average Sex Life”. That was mean as hell. Admittedly, there would have been a time when I would have laughed and reposted it. I did laugh a bit, though. It was that “this-actually-isn’t-funny-at-all-but-I-remember-when-I-used-to-think-like-this” kind of laugh. I cleaned it up before replying to my girl. I didn’t want her to feel the weight of all I’m processing. “Awwww this is ..read more

When Fathers Forsake: David, Jesus, Kerrion and the Questions We Ask

Source: Getty Images Folks love Psalm 27. On any given Sunday, it will preach. Songs have been made about it. And several verses make for a good tattoo. While scholars do not pinpoint an exact time in David’s life when this was written, several things are clear. David was going through and knew only God truly had his back. Of all the verses, Psalm 27:10 can feel out of place. In the midst of thanking God for being shelter from enemies and refuge from the storm, David said when his parents do him wrong, God will hold him close. You know I’m a good Baptist and that KJV is the one that makes me ..read more

PEARLfessor Locksmyth and Lyve Wyre When I made the decision to move to Atlanta, I knew it would be my home base. I was ready to put down roots and settle into a place where all parts of me could thrive. And I didn’t realize how much that mattered until I got here. For the first time, I wasn’t in a city attached to my professional development. I wasn’t here for work or for school. I came here because I wanted to be here. I’d never made such a major life decision simply because I wanted to and, I must say, it feels good. Because I knew Atlanta is my forever home, I wanted to place myself in a ..read more

“Soul Say Yea”: A Tribute to Our Teacher, Her Grace

When Kevin put it in the group chat, I stared at the words in disbelief. They formed a sentence I didn’t expect to read for quite some time. “Benbow, I’m on my way” was Racquel’s response. To know me is to know how much I adore Bishop Iona Locke. Watching her sermons, I tried to mimic her preaching rhythm and cadence. I even got my “two-claps-when-I’m-preaching-and-it-gets-good-to-me” from her. Bishop Locke was my teacher in every sense of the word.  Growing up in the Baptist church, my introduction to preaching women within holiness and apostolic denominations came as a result of Bishop ..read more

Prayers&Pound Cakes. Bundts&Blessings. (September)

Hea yall! I’m really excited about this new installment, “Prayers&Pound Cakes. Bundts&Blessings”! On the first Sunday of every month, I’ll be sharing a new recipe as well as my hopes for all of us. September is National Honey Month (…and Beyoncé’s birthday month). What better time for an Orange Blossom Honey Bundt Cake?! I absolutely love orange blossom honey with its sweet, subtle orange flavor. For this cake, I kicked up the orange flavor a notch by adding orange extract to the cake itself and orange liqueur to the cake soak. But the extract and Grand Marnier don’t take away from the ..read more

This post includes Amazon affiliate links.   There are many things I don’t remember about the week leading up to my mother’s funeral. Grief has a way of doing that. But, of the things I do remember, I’ll never forget the grit casserole Soror Alfreda made. None of us will. Soror Freda, one of Mama’s colleagues and dear friends, came to our home with the breakfast dish, still warm with bubbly cheese. I didn’t even realize people brought grieving families breakfast but I guess it makes sense. We do eat breakfast. At least, we should. Soror Freda loved Mama and Mama loved her. Their friendshi ..read more

“Get Clear in August” Digital Sabbatical
Candice Marie Benbow

Last year, I posted that I needed to go on a digital sabbatical to refocus on my goals for the year. Several women cosigned needing the same and “Get Clear in August” was born. Over 500 women signed up and we were accountability for each other as we stepped away from our apps and digital spaces for a month to rest and restore. It was becoming even more clear, for me, that I needed to do it again for myself this year. 2020 has been…well, are there really even words?! Everybody is tired. Everybody doing the most. And everybody is getting on everybody’s nerves. I need a moment. So I’m taking one ..read more
