It has been quite some time since I have posted here. Made it through the winter, although it wasn’t much of a winter. I was able to keep busy with the Amaryllis, which did really well this winter. I bought several new ones from Easy to Grow, and I had several of my older ones produce nice blooms. This south / east facing window was the perfect spot to grow them I also went into a local big box store and rescued a few that were in bad shape, but the bulbs were nice. They really looked dreadful, but I knew there was hope. The yellow butterflies/ flowers are a sticky trap for the gnats, whic ..read more

Bulb Time

Seems like I had ordered these a life time ago. This is a big enough order, but I have ordered more in the past. I haven’t bought this amount of bulbs in awhile, so it was so fun to see that box in my garage. My order included 250 tulips, 200 daffodils, 12 allium, 50 hyacinths, 5 crown imperial fritillaria, The Allium bulbs were like giant garlic gloves. I ordered Pinball Wizard which is a larger blue allium. The hyacinths were also a nice size. I do plant these a bit closer and I planted several groupings of five bulbs. I have never been bothered by this bulb, although I do typically wear ..read more

Change of Scenery

Time to change the view. Pull up a chair to take in the new view. Or maybe a table for one will do. Of course I went for my yearly mum shopping. Perhaps I got a bit carried away, but they are so wonderful and they certainly help with the change of scenery. I will pot up these mums into bigger containers after I cut and tease out the roots. They tend to be quite root bound when you purchase them in bloom. I add a bit of bio-tone fertilizer to the potting soil, to keep the roots growing strong. I have also found that they need to be checked daily for watering. At times, I do dread the upcomin ..read more

I often have great expectations whenever I visit gardens. A day trip to Great Expectations Daylilies was certainly full of expectation and it was so worth the trip. They are located in Trumbull County, Northeast Ohio. They are open for visitations by appointment only. This is their residential garden and they have been at this location for 27 years. It was very easy to make an appointment by visiting their website. They responded quickly and I had the visit marked in my calendar, with great expectation. Great Expectations is the daylily gardens of Rae and Delmar Dickens. As a couple they have ..read more

DCIM101MEDIADJI_0459.JPG A view of my roadside garden from above. This is a great way to plan your garden. This picture is from a drone that my daughter was operating. It looks good to me, and it is so great to get that bird’s eye view to examine the lay out. I will have to get another shot of this during peak bloom. Upon examining this view, I will add some ground cover between the stepping stones. Another view of a daylily. This daylily is Pockets Full of Sunshine. It has that sculpting effect that can be so dramatic. Some like it, it really is in the eye of the beholder. Let’s examine up c ..read more

A great start for July, my favorite month by far. The daylilies are gearing up for a great blooming period. We had much needed rain and I think I am out of the drought situation. Only have to deal with the smoke now. I guess I am thankful not to be closer to Canada right now, and I feel for those that have had real suffering during the wild fires. I only had to deal with the haze. The first daylily here is Jamaican Love. I couldn’t see clearly across the lake due to the smoke, which was really bugging me. Much clearer today. The haze lasted about three days, and I swear I could smell the smo ..read more

Rainy Days and Mondays

Well, rainy days and Mondays do not get me down. I like rainy days, especially seeing how we really need this rain right now, and Mondays are a start to a brand new exciting week of new blooms. Sunday was sunny, living up to its name, and a few daylilies were showing their faces. Out for early morning pictures of the daylilies that have opened. This daylily is Mendocino, an older daylily that blooms early and has a high bud count, so it’s a keeper. This daylily bed, if I can call it that, is in a field across the street from my house. I was able to cut out a section next to the farmer’s field ..read more

Summer Starters

This is the official start of summer, when I have finished work and open up a Dr. Pepper. You must know that I only drink soda during the summer months, starting with my Dr. Pepper on the first official day of summer vacation. The meteorologists report that June is the start of meteorological summer, which is based on annual temperature cycles. and I’ll take it. June 21st is the astronomical start of summer, which is based on the sun. I needed my Dr. Pepper, so the meteorological start of summer is my summer starter. The Stellas have been blooming. Around here they have replaced the red gera ..read more

Time to Grow

It has been a long time, I really don’t know what I have been doing, working perhaps. At any rate it has been time to grow. School is now officially out and the garden is growing. Lots of spring doings. I keep a list of to do list for the garden, ( OCD thing ) yet also, it is so rewarding to cross items off that list. The daffodils were wonderful this spring, and several tulips did return. Last fall I had planted tulips in large pots, and left them to overwinter in the garage. It worked out pretty well. The tulips knew it was time to grow. I will do this again; however, I did learn that I rea ..read more

November Notes

I know it’s December now, but I still need to review my November notes. It was time to give thanks. Pumpkin Kid was still blooming through November. Of course this is a rebloom, and I noted that the rebloom looks somewhat different. Also, I noted that Pumpkin Kid rebloomed last year also. The warmer November weather helped to maintain the blooms long after all the daylilies had gone to sleep. There was also one mum that bloomed through the entire month of November. This mum had some help, as I would place it in the garage for those nights that below freezing temperatures were predicted. I m ..read more
