I track my net worth on a quarterly basis. For the third quarter of 2021, I'm happy to report that my net worth increased by 7.67% from the second quarter and by 19.78% from the start of 2021. My investments are either automated (i.e. coop investments are deducted from my paycheck) or I've trained myself to make monthly top-ups (i.e. peso cost averaging with my equities investments). In short, they're blah and boring. Exactly how I like them. In preparation for the new car we'll be buying in a few months and the car payments I'll be shouldering for 24 months after that, I've reviewed our mon ..read more

Setting up our September budget

Every one of my monthly budgets usually start the month before it, or even a whole year before, because the data I need for my monthly budgets are generated in the month/s preceding. September is no exception. I have three credit cards where I charge our electricity, cellphone, internet, grocery, gas, insurance premiums and personal expenses. They have different due dates, but I monitor their balances either through an app or the bank's website so even before the statement arrives, I can already estimate how much my credit card bill will be. I really just wait for the credit card bill so I ..read more

With my special project about to wrap up, I'm feeling very Dobby-ish myself. My growing free time still feels a little surreal and I've never been happier to tap out a blogpost. Anyway, this little pleasure aside, the last few months saw me trying to finally come to grips with my anxiety. I remember being 6 or 7 years old and running several worst case scenarios through my mom, who just promptly laughed them off and mocked my anxiety. Gee, thanks mom! I'm not blaming my mom though, because she only reacted the way her elders before her did. It was the only way she knew. So I grew up tryi ..read more

Insecurity Officer to the Rescue!

Kudos to Manulife for this very spot-on ad which didn't exploit emotions or resort to fear mongering to bring its message across. Our life is full of insecurities so we have to face them and sometimes even use brute force (like what Ate Insecurity Officer did. I love her so much!) to smash them to a pulp. No one knows your path and your journey to your path as well as you do, so you do you Boo ..read more

Computing for Monthly Add-On Rates

I always get invitations from my credit card to take out personal loans with the "low monthly add-on rate of 0.59%" or some other ridiculously low amount, and it is so enticing because it's a fraction of a percent! Saan ka pa, right?! But as I did some research, I soon realized that monthly add-on rates are not really the big discounts they purport to be.  To begin, add-on interest "refers to the calculation method of determining the total interest to be paid on a loan. Once the interest’s been added to the principal, the amount is divided by the number of months in the duration of the ..read more

The One and Only Time You Will Need VUL Insurance

As someone who has no skin in the insurance game, whether life or non-life insurance, take it from me that there's a 99% chance that you won't need variable universal life (VUL) insurance or the life insurance-investment combo. Or don't listen to me, whatever floats your boat. I'm not gonna earn from this either way. This is pure public service at its rawest.  If you've been approached by a "financial adviser" a.k.a. insurance agent, then you've probably been regaled with the wonder product that is the VUL insurance. Most insurance agents present VUL insurance as an investment, retireme ..read more

March Madness

I feel like I can finally surface and take a deep breath after the deluge that was March. This month was just flat-out crazy! The month started out promising enough with vaccine roll-out finally commencing and Dr. Gap Legaspi of UP-PGH receiving the first legal Sinovac dose. With his example, vaccine hesitancy among HCWs diminished and they got themselves vaccinated with Sinovac too. My own HCW relatives, who at first opted to wait for other vaccine brands, likewise accepted Sinovac when it became available to them. Personally, I also wouldn't say no to Sinovac after seeing the people I trus ..read more

Empowering Women = Providing Choices

A few weeks ago, I was delighted to find out that my blog was included in First Metro Asset Management, Inc's (FAMI) list of female financial bloggers to know. But what delighted me even more was seeing more new names together with the established lodi financial advocates (i.e. Rose Fres Fausto). Only good things can come from having a financially literate and smart population, specially a more financially smart and financially savvy female population. Back when I worked in the Senate, I used to go around different barangays and lecture on Republic Act No. 9262 or Violence Against Wom ..read more

My stock investment style is boring and predictable because I have designated my equities as my children's educational fund, so I cannot afford to play fast and loose with my equities investment. I invest in stable companies that have good intrinsic values and can pretty much run on autopilot so that a change of management will not significantly affect their performance. I firmly believe that investing should be boring, repetitive and should never take up more than 15-20 minutes of your brain space on any given day so that you can concentrate on your family, job, hobbies, BTS etc. This is wh ..read more

Hello Windfall, Goodbye

We were supposed to visit my sister and her family in Auckland last April, but this had to be shelved when the pandemic cancelled all travel plans for 2020 and beyond.  My airline offered to reimburse the plane fare or hold its value in a travel fund (adding 10% of the net amount to sweeten the deal), but I opted for the reimbursement because cash is always better than a travel wallet which we may not be able to use in the next 2-3 years.  The reimbursed plane fare was supposed to appear in my credit card within 5-6 billing cycles as a cash credit, so I charged all our household ..read more
