Oh boy. 2020. Hello from only the fifth post I’ve made this year. Not a lot of blog-worthy stuff going on these past few months, which I’m sure everyone understands. I spent most of the early COVID quarantine days just trying to get through—trying to be a full-time mom with no reprieve, terrified to interact with anyone outside of my household, and desperately hoping Kroger would have flour and paper towels the next time we placed a pick-up order. It’s a strange thing, living through one of those years that makes such a remarkable impact on the world. But isn’t it strange how we adj ..read more

Life in Quarantine

Hello to the outside world, from one of the only ways we’re able to communicate these days: digitally. I wrote a post a couple of weeks ago about our quarantine experience thus far and how we prepared, how we were managing, but it didn’t sit right with me. While I know so many other people are putting themselves more in harm’s way on a daily basis, and while others are losing their livelihoods and struggling to find basics at stores, here I was writing about how prepared and “comfortable” we are. It felt icky and I unpublished that post, but here’s the thing…this is our reality right now. We h ..read more

The Disney Trip of a Lifetime

I wish I could say that I’m “fresh back from our trip” to Disney, but unfortunately I was sick for the first two weeks after we were back with a minor, never-ending cold and I’m just starting to get back into things. Fortunately I was able to use my downtime go through the hundreds of photos that were taken by my friends, myself, and Disney Cast Members. I can’t help but share some of them here. Ever since the new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge section of Hollywood Studios at Disney World was announced, our group of friends has been talking about how we absolutely needed to ..read more

The Time of my Life

When I started seeing a new therapist in October, it was because I no longer felt like I could handle the disappointment I was feeling, over myself. “I just don’t know who I am anymore,” I told her, explaining how often I’d let myself down, how I couldn’t follow through on any creative ideas, how my identities—as an individual, a designer, a friend, a wife, a mother—all felt like failures, never enough for myself or others. I told her how overwhelmed I felt, how lonely I was. How I was so very tired, all the time, and had no idea how I’d ever have enough energy or time to feel like ..read more

Home Reno Before & After: Master Bathroom

* Post contains Amazon affiliate links * It’s finally finished! This project has taken a while to feel (mostly) complete, simply because I had a hard time finding the right mirror. That was delivered this weekend and now the room is finally finished! (Besides the shower stall; more below.) We knew when we moved in that renovating our master bathroom would be at the top of our to-do list; it’s a small bathroom, we use it every single day, and updated bathrooms can add a lot of value to a home when it comes time to sell. We’re not sure when this bathroom was last updated, bu ..read more

2019 Year in Review

When I first think about 2019, I think of it as a quiet year…and then I remember that this is the year that we bought our house and moved back to Roanoke, so not as laid back as I’d like to think. While my everyday life is relatively simple, full of the responsibilities of motherhood and our home, this year as a whole has had its share of big moments. I love writing this post every year. You can read my previous years’ posts here. 2019 in Numbers We lived in Richmond for five months. We lived in Roanoke for seven. We went to only one concert, but it was one of the bests. Books I Read in 2019

I am in no way surprised that reading fell to the back burner after Des was born, but I’m also not all that worried about it. I didn’t pressure myself this year with reading goals or by trying to keep up with authors and releases the way I used to. Not only did the time I put into reading change, but the way I read changed drastically as well. After over a decade of having this “must buy every single book I read and then keep it for my future library” sort of thing going on, I barely bought any books at all this year (and then I didn’t read most of the ones I did buy.) I joined the Roano ..read more

The Past Decade

I love a good review post, so you know I couldn’t resist going back and highlighting the most important moments and experiences of the past ten years. While I don’t have all of those years recorded here on this blog, I did have them recorded on a previous blog and am sort of glad you can’t see how I used to blog back then, ha! (I’ve been blogging since the MySpace days of 2005 on, so it’s a good thing not all of that is still publicly available. So silly.) A LOT of big things have happened for me in this decade, as it encompasses most of my twenties and the first few years of my thirties, whi ..read more

Des learning Dutch Now that we’re past two of three holidays, I’m doubling down on preparing for Christmas and trying to make it special for Desi. I want to decorate and play Christmas movies and music in a way I haven’t in several years, even if he won’t really understand or remember. I’ll remember, and it’s setting us up for new traditions for the years he will remember. I’ve made a few new mom friends through the app Peanut, a mom-friend-finding app that works sort of like Tinder. One girl and I have a lot in common and our boys are really close in age, so we’ve gotten together a few time ..read more

Giving Thanks

I barely take photos anymore, but I’m trying really hard to change that. Most of the ones I do take are of Des and I don’t share too many of those publicly. Unfortunately, these are pretty much the only ones I managed to come home with after our family’s early Thanksgiving celebration together that aren’t of only him. It was a relief to have our get-together early this year; so much less stress. As another way to make the holiday more simple—though not less work for those who prepared the meal—my parents, aunt, and uncle spent the morning making a brunswick stew instead of a tr ..read more
