How Representation Affected My Postpartum Journey

I gave birth to my first child in the summer of 2017. My pregnancy and delivery were normal and even fun. For months I’d walked around watching my belly slowly get bigger, wondering “What is everyone talking about?” When I heard pregnancy and birth horror stories from other moms it seemed un-relatable. One woman told me her delivery had been an absolute nightmare due to her “inverted uterus.” Others shared stories of how sick pregnancy had left them, unable to eat anything but Saltines for three months straight. I don’t know about you, but I’d have to be on the brink of death to try and subsi ..read more

Now that I’ve exclusively breastfed two little humans, I feel like I can talk about it and maybe give some breastfeeding tips *deep sigh* If you are like me, I had my heart set on breastfeeding. In my mind, I figured how hard could it be to have the baby suck on your nipple for nourishment each day. Wrong, wrong, and WRONG. Breastfeeding is not as simple as it seems and can be quite challenging for some moms. There are all sorts of books and articles on the art of breastfeeding, breastfeeding tips and milk supply/demand etc, but the reality is every mom and newborn baby duo are different. In ..read more

Getting into a workout groove can be challenging for a busy mom. And with 2020’s quarantine regulations, new challenges were added that made getting to the gym a lot harder. It was no longer about making it to the gym, it became more about, how good of a workout can I get in at home? And will my workout help me burn fat and build muscle at home? It can be really easy to only focus on cardio while at home since equipment isn’t required, but if you want to be toned and desire a metabolism that can enjoy a BBQ or Sunday brunch with the girls, then you’re going to need to add some healthy muscle t ..read more

Black Moms Blog

A few months ago my husband asked what I wanted to do for vacation. “Vacation?” I asked. It’s a little bit of a foreign concept. My last real “vacation,” as I would call it, was sometime in college when I got together with friends and we headed to a beach in Mexico. Possibly my honeymoon could be considered my last vacation, but either way, it was definitely pre-baby. I knew I couldn’t be the only mama feeling this way, so this list of 5 things black moms need for the beach this summer, could definitely help more than just me. Now, before y’all start asking, I don’t mean to say that I haven’t ..read more

Book Review: Oh Sis, You’re Pregnant!: The Ultimate Guide to Black Pregnancy and Motherhood

During my pregnancy with my first daughter, I spent hours online reading articles and watching YouTube videos preparing for the journey ahead. After each search term I mindlessly added “Black woman” or “for Black people/families”. The results were few and far in between with my racial preference often being refined to only a select few results or disregarded altogether. Thankfully I had a midwife to lean on, but as an avid reader and researcher I longed for a book, for the book to have in my arsenal. Well, sis. I have some news for you. This is it. Shanicia Boswell is the creator of Black Mom ..read more

This post is sponsored by Mommy’s Bliss. All opinions expressed are my own. I remember my wife and I crying in our pediatrician’s office after we had finally brought our daughter home after 12 days in the NICU. Harper was born six weeks early.  The nurse in the office said in a strong New Orleans accent, “You both are in here crying over this little baby, but this baby will grow and you will then move on to something else to worry about.” At that time, it felt like tough love, but after three years of being moms, we now know she was right! After that first surge of new parent worry, came ..read more

This article is sponsored by The Honey Pot Co. All opinions expressed are my own. As an experienced mom of three awesome kids, I’ve dealt with my fair share of pee; and, I’m not just talking about the pee inside your baby’s diaper.  When I was a new mother, I was looking forward to the joys of pregnancy and motherhood. But, no one ever mentioned to me that, during and after pregnancy, laughing, coughing, sneezing, and lifting would all materialize into actual pee in my pants. Yep…motherhood can literally make you pee your pants.  In the last few weeks of my first pregnancy, I swear I ..read more

There are some really amazing things that happen as a mom blogger. Speaking to Mrs. Obama is one of them. On March 16th, Netflix is releasing is highly anticipated new series, Waffles + Mochi, which features Michelle Obama and two lovable puppets named, you guessed it…Waffles and Mochi. I want you to envision a futuristic Sesame Street focused around healthy eating and self acceptance. That is what Waffles + Mochi felt like for us. The show is developed around Waffles and Mochi who live deep in The Land of Frozen Food and they desperately want to become chefs. Unfortunately for them, everythi ..read more

This post is sponsored by Mommy’s Bliss. All opinions expressed are my own.  As a pregnant mom, I could not wait to have my baby in my arms, but no one told me about a new worry that would emerge once I gave birth. Germs. Combine this worry with the new realities of Covid, I now understood wanting my baby back in a warm, safe womb. Whether you prescribe to holistic medicine or conventional, most new moms research the best pediatricians, foods and products to alleviate some of this worry. Unfortunately, between family members, older siblings, and in our case, daycare, we cannot avoid the o ..read more

This Is What Happened When I Tried Free Bleeding

Every since the birth of my daughter, I have struggled to re-acclimate myself with products for my menstrual cycle. That was eight years ago. Before my kid, I could use nearly anything down there. It did not matter the brand, what size, paper or plastic, tampons or pads, I was okay. It seemed like after childbirth, I was gifted with an entirely new vaginal canal that just simply did not approve of my product choices anymore. Believe me when I tell you, I have been down the rabbit hole with different brands. In the last few years, news reports concerning the safety of certain menstrual produ ..read more
