The City of Gold Coast Council was working with environmental regulators following the detection of a sewage spill in the north of the city on Monday April 8. The council said it was alerted to a sewer main break in a paddock near the Albert River in the Yatala Stapylton area – about 400m east of the M1 – and began repairs immediately, which were successfully completed on Friday April 12. In a statement released on April 19, the council said, “As a precaution, signage has been put in place asking the public to avoid the spill area and the city is investigating how long the sewer main had been ..read more

Circle hooks are widely known as the No.1 choice for game fishermen targeting billfish on live baits or skip baits. These strange looking, inward turned hooks are designed to pin fish in the corner of the mouth, ensuring a solid hook hold and a healthy release. However, circles aren’t just about catch and release fishing for gamefish – they are also a fantastic option when using bait for a range of popular species including bream, whiting, snapper, golden perch, flathead, mulloway and kingfish. This unique hook not only can give you a better hook up and landing rate, but also allows for better ..read more

Hi everyone, what a long and hot summer it was. Many of us have been looking forward to the cooler weather and it has finally arrived. The long-term average temperature range on the Gold Coast for April is a comfortable 17-26C. In the coming months, from June to November, lures come into play a lot on my daily charters when we’re targeting a big variety of fish and squid. This month however, I’ll be getting back to basics with some tips for catching heaps of fish on the humble but amazing saltwater yabby. The Gold Coast Broadwater has some of the best yabby banks in Australia. We are very fort ..read more

Whitsundays sortie – Part 1
Bush 'n Beach Fishing Magazine

At the end of 2023, Shaun, Benny and I started planning a trip. Our idea was to head north around the Whitsunday Islands for a couple of weeks. When organising a sortie north, going at the beginning of the year is always a little risky. Heavy rainfall and the threat of cyclones can put an end to any plans made in advance very quickly. Luckily, we were all in the position of being able to cancel the excursion at the last minute and reschedule it for a few weeks later. The plan for this trip was to fish the reefs and headlands rather the rivers for barramundi and mangrove jack. We made sure it w ..read more

Welcome to this week’s Sunshine Coast Fishing Report. We’ve enjoyed another week of great conditions, which made for a pleasant ending to the school holidays. Local fishos are happy to have their local spots back, and there’s been plenty of fish on the chew. The weather forecast for the weekend and into next week looks pretty grim, with wet and windy conditions predicted. Expect higher tides peaking mid-week due to Wednesday’s Full Moon, which may affect fishing conditions. Offshore We’ve enjoyed another week of prime offshore conditions, with both Smithy’s Charters and Deep End Charters ..read more

Inshore/Offshore reef fishing The Inshore reefs are still producing some really good numbers of school, spanish and grey mackerel. These fish are being found all along the coast but in particularly around the mouth of the Burnett River and the 2 mile reef off Bargara. Trolling garfish or hardbody lures are a good way to get these fish to bite and you cover plenty of ground. Some good sized longtail tuna are beginning to be found more consistently along the coast, topwater stick baits or small metal slugs are the go to lures for these speedsters. Well for the offshore fisho’s it is great to fin ..read more
