While racial injustice has been a central thread of the histories of the United States, since 2013 we’ve seen a tremendous rise in public concern about racism within and beyond our criminal legal system in North Carolina, and across the nation. At the end of the 2022-2023 school year, when she was 14 years old, a verbal altercation occurred between Amerie and a classmate who was berating her and other classmates. This wasn’t the first time Amerie faced harassment and bullying from some of her classmates.
