History says there was a high quality pitching matchup on this day 25 years ago, but offense ended up ruling the day more. It’s quite likely that there were plenty of people in attendance at Yankee Stadium on April 24, 1999 who had no idea the quality of pitching matchup they were getting that day between the Yankees and Blue Jays. Frankly from the final score, you wouldn’t have though that this would be a battle between two of the best pitchers in each franchise’s history. On the Yankees’ side, Andy Pettitte had been in the majors a couple seasons now and had a couple high Cy Young finishes ..read more

Rivalry Roundup: Rays slip below .500, Astros fall deeper in hole

Photo by Mike Carlson/Getty Images The Yankees grinded out a W last night, and their rivals mostly failed to match them. The Yankees sure didn’t look pretty, but they managed to avoid dropping two straight to the A’s and got back to their winning ways — they launched some missiles in the first inning, and then the offense sleepwalked through the rest as the pitching did enough to hold the lead. Well, that doesn’t sound very conducive to consistent winning, but it’s how they got it done last night and in most of their recent games. Thankfully, being on the right side of the decision left them w ..read more

Cabrera’s hot start could force Yanks’ hand

Photo by Cole Burston/Getty Images A promising beginning to 2024 has raised interesting questions about Cabrera’s long-term role this season. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: the Yankees will be forced to rely on a “bench piece” more than anticipated with an aging starter missing more time than originally anticipated. Oswaldo Cabrera went into spring training without a guaranteed spot on the Yankees roster. DJ LeMahieu’s rehab stint is off to the worst start possible (he left Tuesday’s Double-A rehab game after one inning), Oswald Peraza on the IL with a shoulder strain, and Jon Berti ..read more

Photo by New York Yankees/Getty Images LeMahieu begins, halts rehab assignment with Somerset; Bernie Williams to perform with New York Philharmonic; Cole could be throwing off a mound in a matter of days ESPN | Jorge Castillo: DJ LeMahieu has gone through a bit of stop-and-start as he’s recovered from a foot injury suffered in spring training, and it looked like he might finally be nearing a return when he started a rehab assignment yesterday. But the veteran was pulled after essentially just an inning of play last night with right foot soreness. He’ll come back to New York to be re-examined ..read more

Photo by Dustin Satloff/Getty Images The Bronx Bombers look to get off the schneid and remember how to score again. The Yankees’ bullpen has caused its share of teeth-gnashing of late, but as much as I’d like for the group to bring back whiff-happy memories of Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances, it doesn’t matter a lick if you don’t score. And the Yanks have been doing an awful job of doing that lately. It’s already been well-documented, but as a reminder, the offense has scored in just 3 of the 35 innings on this homestand. That’s terrible. All we can from the outside is hope that the hitters ..read more

Photo by Richard Rodriguez/Getty Images Checking in on the prospects the Yankees traded away to acquire two disappointing starters from Oakland When JP Sears took the mound in the Bronx yesterday, he was more than the starting pitcher for the Oakland Athletics. He was a reminder of a trade the Yankees would prefer to forget — a 2022 trade deadline deal that brought them starter Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino as stretch run reinforcements in exchange for Sears and three other prospects. It was a trade that bore little fruit for the Yankees, as Montas posted a 6.15 ERA in nine appearanc ..read more
