Swiss withholding tax on dividends

Hello, I have shares in a Swiss company and will be receiving a $500 dividend in the coming days. I understand Switzerland have a withholding tax of 35%, so I expect the cash I receive to be around $325. I also understand we have a double taxation treaty with Switzerland. How will this impact my tax return? Will the 35% Swiss tax withheld offset that tax I owe to the ATO? Will my accountant have access to all this info when I do my return with him, and does this complicate your tax affairs in any significant way or is it all fairly straightforward? I am with CMC as my broker, if this helps. T ..read more

Lots of AFI - what next

Hey all, I’ve got about 83% of my portfolio in AFI, the remainder is in MQG, CBA (yes I’m aware of the overlap,) and TWE. I’m looking to put some cash which is on the sidelines into play, approx 10% of current portfolio value; any suggestions on what I should look at? I’m pretty passive, just looking for something with a 10ish year timeframe. I have another US portfolio which is 5x the size of my Aus, which is 80% VOO with the remainder mostly mega tech, so not looking to add US equities. Any suggestions are appreciated! EDIT: Thanks so much everyone for your reassurance, really relieved to hear I didn’t do anything to be worried about! Sorry if this is not appropriate for the sub, but I spend a lot of time here and my post keeps getting removed from ausFinance. So I am slightly in a state of panic following some comments I read in an unrelated thread stating how important it is that when you open up a new bank account, to not instantly make large deposits, and especially not multiple large deposits consistently for multiple times periodically. I previously had my savings in a westpac HISA account, but wanted ..read more

Transferring USD cash from a US broker to an AUS based bank

Hey brains trust. I have cash dividends sitting in an ETRADE account in the US. (Yes, an old ESPP). Previously I’ve been able to transfer the full USD amount to my Aus based CitiBank Global Currency account, keeping it in USD, totally fee free. ETRADE doesn’t charge a wire fee. And neither did Citi, to receive the USD. However with the demise of Citi & that wonderful product, I’m stuck. Are there any Aus based banks where I can set up a USD currency acct to receive the cash via transfer? I’m NOT looking to convert USD to AUD just yet. I know banks offer terrible FOREX rates. I just want t ..read more
