As sobriety continues, you would think that it would be easy to forget about what a miracle it is to be constantly sober. I figured my sobriety date would fade into life just as a birthday does. For me, as time passes, I’m realizing that sobriety grows in relevancy. I don’t spend as much time maintaining sobriety or working at it, but it continues to transform my life. Sobriety threw all my priorities upside-down. People, relationships, and God became most important. I no longer fear people or their opinions anymore. I appreciate people – even some who are difficult.  I have courage ..read more

If I had known…

If I had known how good my life was, I would’ve behaved differently. If I’d had a clue how wonderful my family was, I might’ve shown gratitude. If I’d realized they each were fighting his or her own battle, I might’ve prayed more for them.  I might’ve appreciated each one. I might’ve loved their quirky qualities that make them who they are. I might’ve been able to hear pain or question in their voice. I might’ve talked more positively, and judged less. If I had known how soon time would be gone when my kids were little, I might’ve stopped racing to accomplish meaningless tasks. I mi ..read more

A Hero to be remembered

To the merciful you show yourself merciful. At an early age, I came to understand that receiving mercy was how I learned about giving mercy. My Grandma June showed mercy to me when I was a kid. I was picked on by cousins when I was at her house. One day, I suffered dark pinch marks on my arms. When I got away from my cousin Norm, I ran crying to my grandma who quickly and thoroughly shut him down. "I'll take a switch to you, Norman Douglas!" Grandma never seemed all that compassionate on the exterior. She would respond gruffly. She was hardened by a hard life. But when I needed someone t ..read more

Hope

Jesus said that a mustard seed of faith turns into a large mustard tree. And If I have the faith of a mustard seed, I can tell a mountain to move. I have noticed that the seed of faith grows out of hope. As I give my hope to God, it grows into the belief that what I hope for will happen.  17 years ago, it was impossible for me to stay sober. I tried for 6 years to be sober. I went to recovery. I prayed. I was prayed for. I went to rehab 6 times. I took medicine that made it unbearable for me drink. I was put on probation at work. I went to counseling. NOTHING worked. One day I took ..read more

Now get some Backbone

My teacher many years ago used to say “Now get some backbone”.  I thought of her quote the other day. What did she mean? I’m sure she meant that we should have perseverance and fortitude to keep going even when things were difficult. She probably also meant that we would need courage. For me courage is to move forward even in fear. It’s a position of faith where we choose to look at the Lord and keep going. It means ignoring other feelings. I certainly didn’t have any of these qualities when I was in grade school.  A life of recovery gives us all of these. But even with these q ..read more

Grace Tested

Where sin abounded, grace abounded much more. Rom. 5:21 Many of us who have come out of addiction feel like we continue to swim upstream.  For the rest of our lives, we carry the weight of guilt and our past losses with us. But we need to remember that there is all the more grace for us. The AMOUNT of sin we committed means nothing compared to the forgiveness and empowerment of strength to overcome. As a matter of fact, this verse says to me that according to the depth of sin, there is a matching, and even over-abundant grace. Yes, overflow. The more we sinned, the more Christ meets ..read more

My prayer was, “It has to be all You, Lord. Help me give it all to You. I always mess up when I try and fix myself or others.” I, and only I change hearts. I will change yours over and above what you ask or think. I operate in truth and light. I do complete work. Believe this. Step back from your own ways, and step forward into my light. “Okay Father, but this will be a miracle. I give you my fixation – my obsession - with myself. I step back from my ways, and forward into your light.” The reason this is difficult for you is because you have tough expectations for yourself and others. Yo ..read more

Comfort

A friend was telling me how he didn’t like that fact that we as Christians are warned not to be too comfortable. “Why?” he said “Can’t we count on comfort?  We were given peace, comfort, and victory over fear and evil.” That is true, I thought. Maybe we are expecting to be in discomfort more than what God would have us.     As I thought more about this, I realized that comfort is what all the alcohol supposedly brought me. Or so I thought. I wanted comfort from fear, from memories of shame, from traumas, and from guilt. The more I drank, the more I needed to d ..read more

Powerful Memories

Memories come back for a reason. I used to dismiss them if they were sad or traumatic, but they would keep returning. For me it seems that reoccurring memories are usually tied to a belief that I hold to that is either false, fearful, or unresolved.   The feeling I get as I remember the incident sheds light on what I have come to believe because of the experience. I have processed a number of traumatic memories over the past several years. I find that I am gaining freedom from irrational fears, trauma, and shame. I recently re-experienced a childhood memory that was causing me ..read more

Love anyway

Did I wait for you to be clean and whole before loving you? No. I loved you when you were drunk, and self-centered to the core. I loved you when you were choosing to follow the evil one. I ask that you do the same. Love ANYWAY. Love alwaysand on purpose. Choose to listen first to MY voice, and not to evil voices. How do I do this? you ask. Allow me to point to those dark places where you’ve not looked, not listened. There are places where you’ve avoided and looked the other way. Those places are where the love is. The scary, fearful places are well guarded by evil forces. You are now rea ..read more
