Mixed media collage: is this the Glasgow in Bits eBook cover?

I have been a bit quiet on the photography front recently but I have been trying out loads of ideas for the next edition of the Glasgow in Bits eBook. Honestly, I have never really been happy with the original covers.  The first two versions of the eBook seem to have been rushed out a bit quicker than they should have been and on both occasions the cover image was a bit ‘splash and dash’ I suppose.  You live and learn. After a few missteps I have created something I am actually happy with and (at this stage) I am ninety percent sure this will be the cover image for the next edition of the Glas ..read more

Urban Exploration Photography in Glasgow: Springburn Park Winter Gardens
John Hutton Blog

I have to admit I do not much urbex photography.  To be brutally honest, I’m too unfit to go clambering around old buildings that may crumble and fall at any time - I enjoy the use of all my limbs too much for these types of risks.Truth be told, this was not really an urbex shoot per se.  I have walked around Springburn Park countless times and for some bizarre reason I had never got round to photographing this wonderful building.  Luckily for me, the previously padlocked gates and security fences had been prised open which meant I could walk the site. There is something gloriously beautiful ab ..read more

Soviet Bus Stops by Christopher Herwig: a unique photographic perspective of the former Soviet Union
John Hutton Blog

I can honestly say I never saw myself ever purchasing a book filled with photographs of bus stops from the former Soviet Union.  Truth be told, I walked past this book (I still actually visit book shops!) time and time again questioning why anyone would ever buy such a thing but as my love for architecture has grown I find myself seeking inspiration from places I had previously thought absurd.Herwig’s photographs emphasise the vast array of architectural styles within such a genre.  Some are simple box structures while others display a militaristic zeal.  Many show religious or artistic flouri ..read more

Shooting handheld video with the Fujinon XF 18-55mm: How good is Fujifilm's image stabilisation?
John Hutton Blog

I finally got round to buying the Fujinon Lens XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS to use on my XT2 camera. I bought this lens specifically for video due to the lens having Fujifilm’s Optical Image Stabilisation built in to the lens.To give the lens a quick test run down by the riverside in Glasgow's city centre where I shot all of my footage handheld at 30 fps - no stabilisation was applied whatsoever - I did not use any gimbals, tripods or any other balancing aids (including software) to smooth the footage. What you see is out of camera with a little colour correction applied.Personally I thought th ..read more

My Glasgow in Bits project has been coming together quite nicely over the last few months with new shots are been added on a regular basis.Glasgow in Bits began life as a way of bringing together a number many disparate images that I had created during different walks around the city trying out different lenses, focal lengths, or photographic styles. However, in recent months the project has morphed in to a kid of photographic document of Glasgow’s smaller spaces, back streets, architectural details, textures and shapes. The city itself is always under development and the speed of change with G ..read more

Urban and abstract photography using classic lenses: Canon FD 100mm 2.8
John Hutton Blog

The Canon FD 100mm 2.8 is the first vintage Canon lens I have tried. Come to think of it, it is the first ever Canon lens I used. Period.I have read a few bits and bobs about Canon’s FD range and I took this out for a spin around the city centre in Glasgow. Modern architecture in Glasgow’s financial district I enjoy using these telephoto primes as the lend themselves perfectly to a more abstract style of photography - something I seem to be continually pulled back to ..read more

I have been trying out a number of vintage lenses recently.  Luckily, I have a very kind neighbour who has been kind enough to let me borrow a set of Olympus Zuiko lenses.I decided to create a short video while I was checking out some possible architecture and urban landscape locations in the Charing Cross and Anderston areas of Glasgow.Although this was a fairly short walk I was lucky enough to spot a couple of compositions that I will definitely be returning to shoot shortly…  I particularly like the last shot in this video,  what do you think?Feel free to leave a comment or ask any questio ..read more
